Chapter 1 - Lost and Alone
*Grey's POV*
I stand with my back to a wall in a dark garage. All around me I hear the moans of the flesh eaters closing in on me. The scent of them fills my nose as I try to control my breathing. I look around the garage trying to find an escape route and finding none. I spot a window and creep over to it silently. Carefully I look out it and in the moonlight I see a path with only a few eaters.
As I'm looking I hear something shuffle behind me. I snap around quickly and stare into the dark. My heart pounds in my chest and my hands grow clammy. Slowly I reach down to my belt where I have a knife holstered. I wrap my clammy hand around the handle and listen. After a moment of silence I call out into the dark, "Sum' one there?" No response, so I turn back to the window figuring that it was probably a rat.
The path is still clear so I attempt to open the window but it won't budge. I'm going to have to break it. I sigh knowing that the noise will draw eaters. I rip off part of my flannel shirt and wrap it around my right hand. Making a fist, I count to three and punch the glass out. It shatters and flecks of it scatters around on the floor. The eaters that are in my sight turn toward the sound and start to shuffle toward me. I have to move fast now. I climb through the narrow opening and break into a jog. I don't know where I'm going, I just know I need to get away from here. I hear the eaters moans behind me as they try to catch me.
Why did I ever think it was a good idea, to come back here. I just wanted to see my old trailer for one last time, instead I find my brother. No, not my brother, an eater. I have to remember that my brothers gone. My mother, she's been gone, before this whole mess stared. My Father, I couldn't give a shit about what happened to him. He was an abusive asshole, whether or not he was drinking.
I ended up having to stab my brother, no, the eater in the eye socket, it's the only clean way to get to the brain and you have to get to the brain to stop eaters. I don't know why but that's just the way it is.
I continue jogging aimlessly with the eaters following close behind. The cold night air bites at my face and burns my lungs. I need to find a place to rest. I've been on the move since the sun rose this morning, I'm exhausted. I stop for a moment and lean against the side of a trailer. As I try to catch my breath I scan the area for a safe place to rest. The safest I see is climbing a tree, eaters are to stupid to climb. I take a couple more breaths then jog over to the nearest tree. I climb up to a branch just outta the reach of the eaters. Once I'm seated I pull off my grey hooded sweatshirt and tie it around my legs and the branch so I don't fall in my sleep.
I look down and see the eaters gathering below me and sigh. I'm too tired to deal with them right now. I lean back against the trunk and stare up at the night sky filled with millions of tiny glittering stars and wonder, am I the last one left? No, I can't think like that. I close my eyes and let the hungry moans of the eaters lull me to sleep.
