Chapter 45 - Heartache
*Grey's POV*
Blood.
It oozes out around the rotten teeth. I feel my heart drop as I watch the monster begins to tear the flesh away from Evans arm. More blood streams down his arm as he attempts to pull himself away. Crimson tendrils of flesh tear as the smart ones shakes its head, almost like a wild dog. Its pale hands pull the struggling Evans back as it goes in for a second bite.
In shock I momentarily forget about the gun in my shaking hands. Coming back to my senses I pull the trigger back.
*BANG*
The monster releases Evans and turns it attention to me. Its milky white eyes stare back into my own eyes. The cold unnatural glare sends shivers now my spine. Slowly the monster rises. Snarling it flashes its blood coated teeth at me before letting out a blood curtailing bellow.
*BANG*
I pull the trigger again. Brain matter paints the ground behind the monster. It collapses but the moans don't stop. From the stairs and down the hall, the flesh hungry moans of eaters echo.
"Baird, Matt, grab Evans," Murphy commands. "We have to get the fuck outta here!"
In the next instant Murphy's ushering me and Tess out of the room and down the hall. Behind him Matt and Baird carry and frightened and dazed Evans. Before long, eaters appear before me. Without a thought I aim and shoot. Beside me Murphy fires arrows at any eater that get to close.
"Down the stairs," Murphy instructs as he stops to load another arrow.
Following his command I race down, gun raised and hugging Tess close. Baird and Matt follow suit, hulling Evans along with them.
Two more floors down and we're forced to take cover in an apartment. Murphy holds the door shut against the growing mass of eaters filling the hall.
"How many more floors do we have left," Murphy pants.
"I'd say three," Matt answers as he paces the room. "Not that that fucking matters! We're sitting ducks. Goddammit," he curses as he kicks a floor lamp over.
"No, we're getting out of here," I say as I head to a window.
The window over looks the road we've been following. Looking down I find that the drops pretty large but looking closer I see that the building has plenty of places to serve as footholds.
"How do you suppose we get outta here alive? We've lost the food we gathered, we're trapped with hundreds of eaters knocking on the door, and Evans is bitten," Matt snaps.
"Out the window."
"We're three stories up! We can survive that fall."
I shake my head, "we climb down, there's plenty of footholds on this building."
"Worth a try," Murphy grunts as he drives his shoulder into the door.
Not waiting for anyone's else's response I push the window open and pop the screen out. Turning to the group I motion towards the window. In response Matt pushes past me and begins to climb down.
"How's Evans getting down," Baird asks as he nervously glances toward the door.
"I can handle myself," Evans weakly replies as he pushes his was to the window.
"Wait," I say and push Tess forward. "Let her go, I'll go with you next."
Evans nods, "go."
I lean out the window and find Matt halfway down. "Matt, I'm sending Tess down. Watch her."
