Drew was fast to find Jake after the match was let out, pulling him aside in the back lot before he could have any input on it. They were against the wall of one of the giant garages.
"Hey," His voice was hushed, more than necessary considering the sound of engines and chattering was loud. "What's up with you and Max?" His eyebrows were furrowed as he looked at Jake, hair messy from his helmet.
"I could ask you the same thing," Jake retorted. It was starting to get dark, but the shine of lampposts scattered around the lot gave just enough light so Jake could make out the details of Drew's face.
"I asked you first," Drew was quick to respond, seeming to grow more agitated. They weren't as close as when they were in the alley together, more space in between them, but that wasn't to say they weren't far either.
He was hesitant to respond, not really sure if he should make a big deal out of whatever's going on between him and Max. "We used to be close friends..." was all Jake responded with, trailing off.
Drew was silent for a long moment, looking at Jake as if he was waiting for him to finish. The silence hung in the air until Jake cleared his throat. Drew just watched him closely.
"Yeah," He finished lamely, not really wanting to clarify. Drew's eyebrows furrowed, and Jake couldn't help but notice that he happened to do that often. There was a small crease inbetween his eyebrows whenever he did.
"Okay," Was what Drew responded with after a long moment of silence, and Jake was relieved that he didn't push it. He was looking at him with a glare, but it didn't seem harsh at all. It seemed that he just had a resting bitch face.
After the silence stretched for too long, the both of them just standing and looking at eachother, Drew watching Jake closely, he slowly started to talk.
"Are you going to tell me about you now?" Jake asked, and Drew's eyes looked down to his lips for a second before back up to his eyes. He almost seemed to look nervous for a second, but it was so fast that Jake wondered if he imagined it. He hardened his gaze.
"I just don't like him." He said simply.
There was silence for a second and Jake let out a small chuckle.
"There's gotta be more to it than that." He pushed, and Drew shrugged in response.
"No." He said, and Jake smiled nervously, not entirely sure how to respond to that. He then thought about the match. And the fight he started with Max. And how Drew came inbetween them.
"So.. You 'just don't like him' enough to come inbetween an arguement I started with him...?" Jake trailed off, trying to gauge a reaction from Drew but he was incredibly hard to read when he wanted to be.
"Yeah." He responded.
He pushed off of where he was leaning against the wall, his arms crossed infront of his chest. He started to walk away, hitting Jake's shoulder with his own as he passed. It wasn't as harsh as the other times though, more so a nudge.
Why did he keep doing that? Jake thought, turning and watching him walk away. He had a habit of walking away whenever he'd like and being mysterious.
A part of Jake wanted to chase after the guy and shake him down for answers, but if Drew didn't want to tell him why then he would respect it. Although it was weird, he was relieved that the guy didn't seem to hate him as much anymore, despite the title of rivals between them.
The breeze was gentle tonight, blowing through the lot as the sun set. The car exhaust was potent whenever Jake took a deep breath in, and the low rumble of engines was all but background noise against the sound of Drew's footsteps on gravel.
