September 1995 - Hogwarts
I think I had won Ron and Hermione over by the time we got to Hogwarts. I was almost sad to split up for the feast. We were all walking together when I heard my Slytherin friends walk up from behind us. Draco seemed bitter.
"I'm surprised the Ministry's still letting you walk around free, Potter," he said. He was walking much quicker than he usually did, leaving Jane and Blaise behind a little. I quickly hid behind Ron and Hermione, hoping I wouldn't be seen. But it was obvious that Draco had already seen us together. "You better enjoy it while you can. I expect there's a cell in Azkaban with your name on it." Harry almost flung himself onto Draco, but Ron was quick to pull him away.
"What'd I tell you?" Draco hollered at Jane and Blaise, who were not far behind. "Complete nutter."
"Just stay away from me!" Harry screamed. As Jane and Blaise passed, I discreetly pulled her away.
"Hey," she said. "Feeling better?"
"Way better," I said. "I need to ask you a favor. Do you think we could sit away from Draco? At the front end of the table?"
"Why?" she asked. "Is he getting on your nerves?"
"No," I said. "I-uh, just want to sit with you. The two of us. I missed you. And I think the boys will manage to get on without us." She laughed.
"Well in that case," she said. And we marched into the great hall. I prayed Draco wouldn't notice us walk past him. We sat at the end of the table and waited for the sorting to start. "So what's really going on?" she asked me.
"What?" I asked.
"I mean you're acting different," she said. "You've pulled me away from my boyfriend, so tell me what's going on."
"I don't know what you're talking about." I looked over my shoulder and saw Harry and his friends. I smiled at them and went back to my conversation. Jane and I caught up while the first years were sorted.
"And now that we've been sorted," McGonagall announced. She went over a few housekeeping items.
"Best friends tell each other things," Jane reminded me. I sighed as I looked at Harry. I figured I could trust Jane.
"Okay," I said. "I-"
"Grace Snape!" A voice screamed, catching me by surprise. Everyone's head bolted at me, then at the sorting hat, then back at me. My face was red. The sorting hat just called out my name.
"Grace Snape!" it shouted again. I looked at McGonagall for an answer. She didn't know. Neither did my dad. Neither did Dumbledore.
"Grace Snape!" it called out again. Slowly, I stood up and made my way to the front of the room. Was I about to be sorted again? I liked Slytherin. My best friend was in Slytherin. My dad was in Slytherin. Slytherin liked me.
McGonagall hesitantly placed the sorting hat on me while all eyes watched me.
"Ahh," it said. "You're back. Yes, I was hoping you'd return. So what do we have here? You've enjoyed Slytherin, I see. Quite popular in Slytherin. And a quidditch champion? Very impressive. And a very special friend in Slytherin."
Was it talking about Draco or Jane? What did it mean by a special friend?
"Ah but you remember, don't you?" it said. "When I sorted you into Slytherin last year, I said for now. I think you knew you'd be back here. So, this time, better be...Gryffindor!" This was the part where the great hall was supposed to erupt in applause. But instead, the room was dead.
