01 || Dream

Snow.

Cold.

Numbness.

An unbelievable gust of a strong wind.

The sound of everything being destroyed.

Layers of snow on the ground leap in the air. It made the clean air obscure and foggy.

Everything wiped away, blown away in less than a second.

The snow stinged like they were needles.

Eyes dried from forgetting to blink.

Everything was gone. All gone...

"...Aki-kun..."

"AKI-KUN!!"

Hayakawa Aki felt a strong slap on his cheek and he jumped on his seat.

"Finally. It's rare for you to sleep at this time. Looks like you didn't sleep well last night... Aki-kun? You okay?" A young lady with a eye patch on her right eye looked into his face in concern.

"Huh?" Aki felt something trickle down his face. Cold sweat. His breathing was unstable.

The young lady, Himeno, then cracked into a smile. "Nightmare?"

"Maybe... I forgot," Aki said as he quickly wiped his face with the back of his hand and tried to calm down.

Himeno sat back down on her seat and lit her cigarette. She inhaled and exhaled a good amout of smoke from her mouth.

Aki sometimes have dreams about that day, when the Gun Devil attacked. His whole house, his family were all gone from that disaster. This event was the reason why he became a devil hunter, to kill the Gun Devil.

He had a little brother and twin sister. His little brother, Taiyo, had a weak body and often had fevers. His parents were eager to stay by Taiyo's side so he would at least feel a little entertained. Therefore, Aki would often play with his sister, (Y/n). 

But on that day, (Y/n) went to go buy Taiyo's medicine. Aki was alone so he asked his dad if he could play catch with him. As always, his dad rejected. Taiyo felt bad for Aki so he went outside to play with him. 

Aki wasn't feeling really happy but they eventually got into a fun snowball fight. 

After a few minutes have past, Taiyo went back to the house to get gloves so that they can play catch.

And that was it. A few seconds later, a huge gust of wind blow away everything in its way, including his house where his family was in. 

Aki stared in disbelief, although nothing could be seen from the foggy air from the snow.

He ran to the pharmacy where (Y/n) would usually buy Taiyo's medicince. But that building was also torn down. Everything around it was destroyed. Flat on the ground.

Aki searched (Y/n) for days, but he couldn't find her anywhere.  He gave up. 

He lost everything that day.

A call from his phone made Aki jump back into reality.

Himeno looked at his way. "You're phone's ringing."

Aki took it. It was Makima.

"Good afternoon, Makima-san," Aki said in his calm voice.

"Hello, Aki-kun. I want to have a talk with you about your next mission. Will you come to my office at 6?" 

"Yes, ma'am." Aki replied and the phone was hung up.

"Who was it?" Himeno asked as she puffed smoke from her mouth.

"Makima-san. She wants me to come to her office later."

"Oh," Himeno smiled. "Well, I gotta get going now, good luck with Makima-san!"

"...Huh?" Aki glanced at Himeno and but she got up from her seat and left.

It was almost 6, so Aki was walkling on the halfway to Makima's office.

He looked outside the window where the sun was starting to set. He saw his own reflection and he stared at himself. He fixed his hair and tie and bit and knocked on Makima's door.

"Come in," A faint feminine voice was heard, and Aki opened the door politely.

"You're a little early," The corner of Makima's lips raised a little.

Aki nodded and stood in front of her desk.

"Well, I'm starting with the basic information." Makima closed her eyes and put her chin on the palm on her hands.

"Recently, police finds devils killed in random places. Usually, at least one Devil Hunter is there to explain and report the detail but no one. So we are thinking that there is someone killing devils who is not a Devil Hunter."

"Not a Devil Hunter? How is that possible?" Aki asked.

"I don't know either,  but something definitely is going on and I want you to go on a mission to find out who it killing all these devils," Makima opened one of her drawer and pulled out a piece of document.

"Here's detailed information about this incident. It says when and where the devils were killed, and how they were killed."

"Thank you," Aki recieved the paper from her hands.

"If you have any questions, just let me know. You are dismissed."

Aki bowed a little and left the office.

He walked home, reading the paper.

He would start this mission tomorrow.
