(Thanks to the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows for teaching me the title of this chapter.)
Adronitis. Noun. Frustration with how long it takes to get to know someone; wishing that instead of having to start from the outermost knowledge of a person to get to the innermost, that you could just start knowing their deepest secrets instead. A desire that perhaps you could start by learning their most secretive and deeply held secrets, to work your way out and ask their favourite colour or flower.
The experience of adronitis was one that Y/N was intimately familiar with, and that did not change when it came to their new roommates. They sat awkwardly on the couch across from Sun, watching some stupid petty reality show on TV. Sun seemed rather entranced by the show, watching it with a glimmer of excitement in his sky blue eyes. It was almost like he'd never seen any of the other thousand reality shows that followed the exact same premise. Y/N didn't even bother to remember the name of this one, truth be told, and they weren't paying attention to it.
Moon wasn't present. They were working... Apparently, Sun worked from sunrise to sunset, and Moon worked from sunset to sunrise. It was a weird metric for working hours. Y/N was considering asking about it, but they didn't dare speak up from the silence for fear of saying the wrong thing.
"Why is marriage such an important concept that a person would be willing to bond themselves for life to a stranger?" Sun inquired, switching in an instant from the intent and observant gaze they had on TV to a curious glance towards Y/N. "I mean, I at least conceptually understand why someone would want to marry someone they care a lot about, but wanting to marry for the sake of marriage doesn't make sense to me. Well, arranged marriages among nobility is one thing... but the people here are claiming they're doing it for love? Isn't marriage a product of love and not the other way around?"
"That's... I mean, yeah I guess? These kinds of shows are all kinda stupid and extreme though. The people probably are more so there to get a career in acting than actually finding love. Even then, they're probably desperate for a relationship to work out and assume that marrying someone will somehow make things work out? Not really sure, nobody knows the truth but them. Those are just my thoughts anyway." Y/N answered, feeling relieved at the fact that Sun had started a conversation. The silence had gotten far too loud for their liking.
"Huh... that's sad," Sun stated, a small frown on his face. "Do people really get that lonely? I mean... Is it that hard to go out and find people to spend your life with? I... people are everywhere, though?"
"Oh you sweet summer child..." Y/N muttered, slowly shaking their head. "Making a friend is hard. You have to find and talk to a random stranger, making sure you make a good impression and hope they're not terrible. Then you have to actually get to know them, and be willing to let them know who you are. After all that, you gotta hope to God that you don't drift away from each other."
"... Well when you say it like that it does sound a whole lot more difficult than I first gave it credit for," Sun glanced away, fidgeting with the sleeve of their shirt. "I suppose they probably don't have much to lose. After all, humans only have so much time to live, and there's so much to achieve."
"This conversation got really philosophical real quick," Y/N noted, but a part of them was glad that they weren't just talking about the weather or something. They were, truly, given the chance to get a peek into Sun's genuine feelings... at least, they could only assume they were genuine. That was what they were hoping, basing their interpretations on the assumption that Sun was telling the truth. After all, why would he lie? Unless he was trying to create a false identity because he was running away from something, that would explain the desperation for an apartment...
Stop overthinking things, they reminded themself. Sun was just another person who needed a place to stay. Y/N had really ought to stop being so overly critical and creating crazy abstract ideas... They came to a simple conclusion: they spent too much time reading fanfiction. They also were not going to change that.
"I suppose I'm just interested in the more abstract concepts in life. Though, I can't tell whether I like art because I'm interested in abstract concepts, or I'm interested in abstract concepts because I like art," Sun pondered on that for a second, looking up at the ceiling as they twirled the edge of their sleeve around one of their fingers. "Maybe it's a little bit of both... say, do you like art? What kinds do you like most? Plays? Performances? Paintings? Sculptures? Written stories? Music? Something else entirely?"
Y/N could see the excitement in Sun as he looked back over at them, leaning just a bit closer - unintentionally, probably. "Uh... Music. I like music a lot. A little bit of everything. Sad music. Happy music. Calm music. Energetic music. Yeah..."
"Oh I love music! I mostly like plays, though... Musicals- don't get me started on musicals! They combine two different art forms and when done properly they can be simply enthralling! It takes at least forty different people to set up a professional performance at the bare minimum. You need actors, directors, technicians, hair and makeup artists, costume designers, vocal coaches, songwriters, and so many more! The amount of people all putting their utmost effort into creating something for an audience to enjoy - oh, and don't forget that a lot of it is done in front of a live audience! It helps you forget how cruel people can be to each other, knowing that they can work together to craft an elaborate work of art..!"
It didn't take a genius to figure out that Sun was definitely a theatre kid.
"You seem very passionate about musicals... and plays in general," Y/N thought for a moment. They were probably gonna regret asking, but it'd probably make Sun happy to talk about it, so why not? "Do you have a favourite?"
"One favourite? Oh gosh, that's a lot of options! Hamlet is a classic, of course, but really I like pretty much any Shakespeare play. Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night... I could go on. There's also Rent and that's pretty nice too. Far Away, oh goodness that one is... very interesting. Antigone is quite the story, moral debates... Making Noise Quietly is so emotional and sad! Private Lives is a whole lot more lighthearted though, I certainly appreciate that one. Really there are just so many it's hard to choose just one as my favourite."
"... I have never heard of any of those except for the Shakespeare ones, but you clearly like a whole lot of plays. You weren't kidding when you said they were your favourite form of art." Y/N gave Sun a smile. They could always appreciate the happiness of other people. It was pleasant to be around someone as optimistic as Sun... even if it was quite a bit awkward at first.
"Oh, definitely not. Moon says I'm a theatre kid... but I have absolutely no idea what that means. Do you know what it means?" Sun asked, tilting his head.
"It means that you're very passionate about theatre," Y/N explained. They most certainly agreed with Moon's analysis.
"Well then by that definition, Moon is a theatre kid too!"
