Missing You

Butterflies fluttered in your stomach as you went to lay down. The mattress sunk under your weight, the shifting of you pulling the comforter over you before settling down being the only sound in the house. Everything was silent. You turned off the bedside lamp.

    Pitch darkness. You blinked. Silence still clung to the dark air. It was beginning to feel cold.

     You snuggled deeper under the blankets, nuzzling into the pillow. But it wasn't the same.

    As much as you imagined the warmth of a body and beating heart curled into your own, you were confronted with the reality that he wasn't there.

    Tanjiro had been on a long business trip. Longer than any of you had expected.

     He was always busy but every day after work he came home to spend the rest of the evening with you; never to leave your side. And even at work, he never failed to send you texts asking if you were okay, that there was lunch in the fridge, or that he made you a desert or did your laundry. His actions of love pardoned the time during the day without him.

    But still, you missed him.

     You could barely stand not seeing him for one or two days. But almost two weeks?

     Life was unbearable.

     You missed hearing his laugh and voice. You missed finding little notes with his handwriting telling you how much he loved you. You missed his warm sage and pine scent. And you missed not feeling the warmth of his body warm yours when you went to sleep each night.

     Life was truly unbearable.

     He texted and called you but it wasn't the same. You wanted him here with you.

     A couple of moments passed. The silence remained.

     A heavy sigh left your lips and you rolled over to pick up your phone. You reviewed the last text he sent you: a simple "goodnight my love" with a little heart. Your own heart clenched. You went to your photos and recalled all your memories together: dates, birthdays, anniversaries...

     Your lip began trembling.

    To stop your tears, you put your phone away and rolled back over. You reached over to his side of the bed and pulled his pillow into your arms. His faint scent remained. But it was enough to comfort you, if you thought hard enough, it was almost like embracing him.

    Eventually you calmed down. Your breathing slowed. A feeling of content washed over. He would be back soon, you knew he would. You hoped he would...

     You sighed and drifted off to sleep.

     Tanjiro quietly turned the front door knob open and silently walked in. His keys jangled when he took them out and sent them aside, the door shutting behind him. The house was quiet, there was not a single sound.

    He was exhausted. Utterly exhausted.

    When he was informed the business trip would be extended he almost went home. He should've gone home. The extra week was just for kicks but he was told it was for "important meetings". He didn't know what was so important about partying all day.

    So to say he was annoyed was an understatement. But all that was subsided by his relief to be back home in his own bed.

    And he was especially relieved to come home to you.

     He placed his luggage to the side and headed up the stairs. It was the middle of the night, you would be asleep. He crept down the hallway to your guys' bedroom.

    His heart beat rapidly. He was finally home! He couldn't wait to see you, to have the warmth of your body against his. He never wanted to leave your side again.

     He couldn't make out much in the darkness of the room. He knew you were sound asleep.

But as he changed and neared the bed, your breathing came heavy. Concerned, he instantly nudged you awake.

"Y/n?" He questioned quietly. Panic rose in his chest. "Y/n?"

Eventually, you were startled awake. Tears brimmed in your eyes, you vision was blurry. But all you knew was that somewhere came the voice of your love.

"Tanjiro...?" Your voice cracked.

You reached out for him and he gently took your hand to place it to his cheek. You had never felt so relieved to feel his warmth against you once more.

You took no time in bringing him into your embrace. He was so warm and you just... you just missed him so much. Your heart beat rapidly.

"Tanjiro..." You breathed.

He embraced you like letting go would separate you two forever. He was so glad to be back with you. But he noticed how you trembled ever so slightly.

"Y/n, is everything okay?" He pulled back to look at you. His thumb drew over your cheek. You sniffed.

"Nothing, it's just..." You glanced away. "I had a bad dream..."

In hearing your sad and broken voice, Tanjiro quickly gathered you back in his arms. He held you so tightly against him. He would never leave you again. His heart resonated within you.

You gratefully curled into the curve of his body and buried your face in his chest. Oh how you missed being like this with him...

"I've missed you Tanjiro..." You murmured. You had closed your eyes, lulled to sleep by his soft breathing.

"I've missed you too Y/n... so much..." He pulled you closer.

A content sigh escaped his lips. You snuggled into his side and slowly began falling asleep. All of your worries drifted away and eventually, sleep took hold.

Moments passed where all that sounded were two hearts beating in a synchronization of love.

Tanjiro shifted and placed a kiss to your head.

"I love you."
