   "Y/n! Watch out!"

You barely had time to hear his words before a set of claws slashed the space you just occupied. By pure reaction, you turned out of the way and faced the demon again. Your lover, Tanjiro, stood off to the side. He was panting heavily, attempting to control his breathing to stop the blood-flow; he was badly injured. With a deep cut to his side just above his kidneys, he was rapidly losing energy. If you both didn't defeat this demon, it would only be a matter of time before you'd succumb to a painful death. You were slowly panicking. You hadn't signed up for this; you two were simply traveling home after a successful mission. It wasn't your fault a demon had cornered you two when you both were least expecting it. And the mission wasn't so easy either; you both were exhausted-- and injured. This was beyond inconvenient.

"Y/n, hey, baby," He nudged your side, desperation in his voice. You snapped back, realizing your breathing had fallen unbalanced. He wasn't fairing well either, yet he still looked at you with so much stability it reassured you if just a little. The demon prowled off to the side, circling you two and calculating it's next attack.

"You have to stay strong, please..." He stiffened, falling into a stance. "We'll get through this, I promise."

With that, he lunged forward. His attack wasn't as sharp and refined as previously, probably due to his sustained injuries. But he moved with such power and purpose, seeming to see every move the demon made with a heightened awareness. A determined look cast over his visage, especially when he swung for the demon. You finally felt a surge of energy shoot through your veins as you jumped in to corner the demon, preventing it from moving further while Tanjiro aimed for its neck. This would finally be over with.

That was until it teetered out of the way, dodging his attack. Tanjiro's wine hues widened in surprise, the force behind his body keeping him forward. You barely moved out his way before you two turned to the demon. But it was nowhere to be found. You helped him up, seeing his face contort in pain from the movements. Concerned, you leaned down by his side.

"Tanjiro..." You began, but he hoisted himself up, brushing you away.

"I'm fine, we just have to--"

His words were cut off when the demon suddenly returned behind you. You felt claws sear your back, knocking you forward with a gasp. Tanjiro hurried up, moving forward to knock the demon back. You fell forward but not before he caught you and lowered you to the ground. He glanced back nervously, as his attack seemed to actually connect; but the demon was recovering.

"Y/n, a-are you okay?" His voice dropped in register, panic surging through his body. His hand pressed again your back in an attempt to ease the bleeding. You inhaled and exhaled heavily, trying to control your breathing. But it was beginning to be futile when such pain coursed through you. Hearing his concern pained your heart; you had to stay strong for him-- he told you that. Gradually, you tried to get up. You briefly caught the demon's eye; it was ready for another attack.

"You have to go," You hoarsely breathed. "I-I'll be okay..." You slumped to your knees and pushed him away. His eyes desperately searched yours, hesitancy in his body. He couldn't just leave you; if the demon saw your weakened state, it'd go after you as an easy target. He couldn't let that happen. Protect someone... those words rang through his mind-- protect you. He would until his last breath.
