The sun had begun its descent, casting a warm golden hue over the grounds of Sweet Heaven Boarding School. Classes for the day were finally over, and Amber and Lucian found themselves walking side by side towards their dorm. Their earlier banter seemed to have quieted, replaced by a sense of camaraderie born out of their shared detention experience.
Amber sighed, glancing at Lucian. "I still can't believe the teacher put us in detention. It's like she's on a mission to make our lives miserable."
Lucian nodded in agreement. "You're not wrong. Detention for a little friendly sparring – it's ridiculous."
Curiosity gnawed at Amber, and she turned to Lucian with a genuine question. "You know, I've always wondered... what was it like growing up as an angel in a human world?"
Lucian's expression shifted, his guard dropping just a fraction. He looked ahead, lost in thought. "It wasn't easy. Always trying to keep the secret, to make sure I didn't hurt anyone by accident."
Amber listened intently, her curiosity piqued. "Did you ever...?"
A wry smile tugged at Lucian's lips. "Oh, plenty of times. Like in elementary school, for instance. We were playing football, and I ended up kicking the ball too hard. It hit one of my friends, and he got hurt pretty badly."
Amber's eyes widened with sympathy. "Oh no, that must have been awful."
Lucian's gaze remained distant. "Yeah, my friends all left me alone after that. I decided it was better to stay away from people."
Amber's heart went out to him, the vulnerability in his voice tugging at her. "I'm sorry you had to go through that."
Lucian's walls seemed to rebuild themselves, and he offered a sassy grin. "Eh, it's fine. I've managed to survive so far."
Amber couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for him, a sense of understanding that transcended their differences. She looked at him, her expression softening. "Well, for what it's worth, I think you're more than just your reputation."
Lucian's smirk returned, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Oh really? And what else am I, in your expert opinion?"
Amber's lips curved into a gentle smile. "You're someone who's had to navigate a world where you didn't quite fit in. You've had your struggles, just like the rest of us."
Lucian's façade remained intact, his voice teasing. "Wow, quite the pep talk. You should be a motivational speaker."
Amber laughed, her soft laughter filling the air. "Maybe I will be someday."
As they reached the entrance of the dorm, Amber felt a surprising sense of camaraderie with Lucian – an unexpected connection that defied their initial perceptions of each other. And in that moment, the lines between them seemed to blur, leaving her to wonder if there was more to Lucian Danford than met the eye.
"Well," Amber said with a playful smirk, "I'll let you off the hook for now. But don't think this means we're suddenly best friends."
Lucian's grin matched hers, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Oh, I wouldn't dream of it, Valentino."
With a shared understanding and a hint of camaraderie, Amber and Lucian headed to their respective rooms to get ready for the evening, leaving behind the whispers and rumors that had defined their interactions thus far. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the campus, a sense of intrigue hung in the air, hinting at the tangled web of secrets and emotions that continued to weave its threads around them.
