“So, what does the Forklenator need from me today?”
Mr. Forkle rolled his eyes. “I have a job for you.”
“I’m shocked.”
“I need you to take this seriously, Isabel,” He told me.
“Fine,” I groaned. “What am I doing this time?”
He cleared his throat. “I got a note from your cousin.”
I clenched my fists. “What does he want?”
“He wants to meet with you. I think you should go.”
“I’m not going to a meeting with the man who killed my best friend.”
Mr. Forkle sighed. “I already agreed.”
“Why?!”
“I thought it might be important to gain some insight on the Neverseen’s plans,” He explained.
“Well I’m not going,” I told him.
“Yes you are.”
I took a deep breath and slowly unclenched my fists. “When and where?”
“5 minutes,” He told me. “I’m not sure where the location is, but he sent me a leaping crystal with his note. It’s one use, so make sure you have your home crystal.”
I rolled my eyes and took a deep breath. He placed a glittering blue crystal in my open palm.
“I’ll report to you tomorrow,” I assured him as I raised my crystal to the light.
He nodded as the light shimmered around me, whisking me away. As the light faded, a glittering river appeared in its place.
“Long time no see.”
I took a steadying breath and turned to face the man who ruined my life.
“Brant.”
“Izzy.”
“What do you want?” I asked him. “Forkle said you requested a meeting.”
“Is there something wrong with wanting to see my cousin?” He raised an eyebrow.
I rolled my eyes. “We both know you didn’t call me here for a friendly visit. What do you want?”
Sparks flickered at his fingertips.
“I just wanna talk.”
“Well I don’t, so make this quick.”
He rolled his eyes. “I still don’t know how you and Jolie got along so well. You’re complete opposites.”
“Don’t talk about her.” My fists clenched. “You’re not worthy.”
Flames appeared at his fingertips. “I loved her!”
“So did I! And now I have to live with her loss while you go play pretend with an organization that doesn’t give a crap about you or any of its other members!”
“I’m more important to them than you realize.”
His flames grew. I didn’t back down. There was plenty of water for me to call if necessary.
I scoffed. “Right, because they totally don’t have another pyrokinetic who is much more experienced and controlled than you.”
He shot a beam of fire towards me. I jumped to the side, but the flame caught on my cape. Quickly, I extinguished it with just a flick of my wrist.
“You’ve gotten better.”
I rolled my eyes. “Why did you request a meeting? So you can scar me some more?”
I motioned to the burns littered across my wrists and forearms.
“I want to recruit you.”
I snorted. “Recruit me? Right. Because I’m totally joining the organization that killed my best friend.”
The ball of fire in his hands grew larger. He shot it at me. I put my hands up in front of my face, shielding myself. A beam of fire shot out of my hands, colliding with his in a duel of sorts. Immediately, my hands dropped to my sides, and Brant’s fire ball collided with my chest, knocking me to the ground in a coughing fit.
The world spun as I dug my home crystal out of my tunic.
The light had barely made contact with me when everything went black.
