Chapter 28

"Thank you" Jade said as the waiter left the food on their table.

"You're welcome, anything else I can get you?"

"I think we're okay for now" she smiled then he turned and walked off.

"Oh Ethan said he and Christian are going to Denver" Daniel said.

"Mhm, next week right?"

"Yea. You're not going are you?"

"Nope".

"Oh thank god, I would've been bored out of my mind" he groaned and she laughed.

"Well when you're finished with classes, we can head downtown. There's plenty of clubs there and we can invite Vivian and Elliot too".

"Sounds like a plan. How are you and Christian?"

"We're really good actually, things feel just natural again" she said, alluding to the previous break up "of course he never made things feel unnatural, but I guess I always had a thought in the back of my mind like I was scared to mess up" Jade explained.

"And not anymore?"

"No, thankfully".

"Good. I'm happy you guys were able to work through all of that".

"Me too. You and Ethan are good, yea?" Jade asked and watched Daniel fidget with his utensils "is that a no?"

"No, no we're good. Me and him are doing great. I've been giving him space for the last couple of days. Well I wouldn't say space, more like trying not to tick him. I do what he asks and what he wants and try my best not to argue or anything".

"Did something happen?"

"His parents" Daniel said with a nervous laugh.

"Elaborate".

"I've noticed that whenever they get under his skin, he gets real down on himself. Goes through the phases, becomes a little less touchy but also a little less dominant. I know it's because they do a good job of reminding him that his entire existence is the worst thing that could've happened to them, but me bringing it up only makes it worse".

"Christian did say their relationship has been bad for years".

"Very bad from what I can tell, but I don't know much. All I know is that to them, he's more of an ATM than a son and to himself he's always going to be their son. No matter what horrible things they say, if they put a hand out he'll drop a stack of cash into it without question. Just gave them 10K the other day".

"That's so horrible. Have you ever talked to them?" Jade asked.

"His mom, once. Even that got Ethan all alert and he would never even propose the idea of me talking to his father. I guess it's that bad".

"He's protecting you".

"I know that, I wish he would keep some of that protection for himself though. Has Christian ever said anything about his parents?" Daniel asked.

"Just that Ethan would've been better off with any other set of parents, but he doesn't get into it much either".

"I figured. It'll pass with Ethan and thankfully he handles things separately".

"That is a very good thing" Jade agreed.

"How's Nick doing. He had his surgery right?"

"Yea, he's doing much better. I think a lot of it was nerves and anxiety. No complications, so just PT for now".

"And how about his treatments overall?"

"Steady, still no timeline though".

"He'll get there".
