13th January 1986,
I'm travelling to Hawkins to go live with my aunt and uncle and my favourite cousin. It'll be the first time in six years since I last saw them. I'm grateful they allowed me to come live with them - They know how bad my relationship is with my father.
"God this place still looks like shit." I muttered to myself as I entered the town. I rolled my window down to be greeted with the smell of cow shit as I drove past the repulsive looking fields.
I have no idea why my aunt and uncle stayed in this place because I know they belong where my family live. They are too posh for this town. The sad truth is, I dress like I belong here. This place is nothing like back home. I'm used to fancy homes with big gardens, not some run down streets and a town that looks dead.
I suppose the change will do me good. It's still winter and I get to see Steve for the first time in six long years. I sure miss the memories of growing up together, but I'm glad I get to see him a lot more now. I'm hoping he's got a decent job and a pretty girlfriend by now and is completely sorted in life.
I pulled into their driveway and switched off the engine. I stared at the house for a while before hopping out and knocking on the door.
"Y/N! Lovely to see you again." My uncle greeted me with a warm but relatively short hug. I seem to be his favourite niece for whatever reason, even though I now dress and act completely different than he's used to.
"It's good to see you both again." I told them, receiving a death glare from my aunt. She's never liked my style of clothes, or me for that matter. She definitely won't like me now that I'm classed as a rock chick and my fashion choice has changed drastically since we last saw each other. "What is that god awful thing on your shirt?" She said, disgustingly. I look down at my Black Sabbath shirt and smiled. "It's good music, that's what. Not your average bad taste in music." I gave her some attitude to which she brushed it off.
We never got along. I guess she couldn't handle the fact her husband was sweet to me while I visited growing up and she got a little jealous because she wasn't favourite for those days I was over.
"Where's Steve?" I questioned, looking around the home, hoping he would show his face. "He's working." My uncle's tone of voice had changed to more of a distasteful one. "That's good. At least he has his life sorted." I smiled to myself, being proud of him.
My uncle scoffed, "If that's what you call it." They seemed to have a hate/hate relationship and I never understood why.
"Where does he work? I'll pop by to see him after I've brought my things in.""Family Video. Near the arcades, if you can remember where that is." My aunt interrupted and rolled her eyes.
"Ok.." I wonder if anything happened before I arrived to make them act like this.I got my uncle to help me unload my things into their spare room, where I will be staying. The room hasn't changed much since I last stayed over, except from a new, bigger bed.
"So, what happened between you and your dad?" My uncle asked. "I don't wanna get into it yet. I'll tell you another time." I wasn't ready to talk about the things he did to me, but I know Steve will probably ask the same question.
"Well you're always welcome here, just don't come to church dressed like.. well that." He pointed to my choice of outfit. I chuckled because I know damn well I won't go to church with them. It's not in my nature.
We finished bringing the rest of my things in from my car. "Right, well I'm gonna go locate Steve's work and I'll see you later." I said goodbye to him and left the house.
One thing I've always loved about Hawkins is the town can be pretty quiet. As I drove past buildings, it brought back memories of Steve and I and how he'd always get me in trouble from ding dong ditching and causing mayhem at the arcades.
