As Meredith walked away, Harold still hadn't taken his eyes off her before she rounded the corner at the end of the deck and then lost her out of sight.
The officer went back to his position together with other officers "What's the reason for that expression on your face Harold?" asked the sixth officer, as well as his great friend, James Moody "What do you mean?" answered the other "Come on Harold! Who is she?" James asked him nodding his head referring to the girl who was there a little while ago "A first class girl that I accompanied to the room last night" he replies smiling "Did you go to the room with her? And did you..." James was insinuating the impossible but was interrupted by the other officer "James no! she was drunk on deck, she was lost and I offered to take her back to her cabin" although he didn't even know the name of that blonde, Harold doesn't deny himself that that mysterious girl was the most beautiful he had ever seen "Well, it would be time too, mate! But not with the passengers, you know the rules, especially if they are first class bastards" the young officer warned him, reminding him that the lines of the White Star Line strictly forbid close relationships with passengers "Don't worry about that... And then she looks different" Harold answered smiling "Yes, well, different for sure, you don't find drunk all the first class women on the deck at night" Moody chuckles "That's for sure" Harold said returning the laugh "Anyway, whatever happens don't talk about it with Lightoller, if you don't want to risk losing your job" Harold and Charles Lightoller, the second officer of the ship, didn't have a great relationship. Charles, he was always very hard and strict with Harold for being one of the junior officers "I will do it, just don't worry James" and with a wave of his hand Harold left the deck to start his break and start again in the evening for the night shift."Meredith, where have u been? You missed Mr. Andrews' brilliant explanation about the ship's funnels! And you could have imagined that the lifeboats are not enough for all the passengers..." the redheaded girl informed her, but nothing that she said was listened by Meredith, so she asked her the question she so much wanted to ask her from before "So? who was it?" Rose asked "Who are you talking about?" Meredith asked her "The officer" continued the other "He helped me with my dress, he's the fifth officer Lowe" but seeing the insistent gaze of the girl in front of her she continued "Harold, Lowe" Meredith said "In such a short time you already know his name..." Rose was doubtful, but she didn't want to tell that the night before she was drunk and let a man take her to her room, it would be scandalous "Instead tell me about yourself Rose... what about Caledon?" Meredith wanted to know more if she was to get to her goal than she was to use Rose as a 'conduit'... "Caledon what?" cofused the redhead made a doubtful face again "Do you love him?" Meredith insisted "No, I mean... I think so" Rose didn't even know what she was doing on that ship "Do you think so? You just need to see how you look at him to understand that you can't stand that man..." the blonde laughed "Cal is magnificent... he's just not my soulmate, you know what I mean? he insists on giving me a lot of jewels but I don't want them I'm interested in knowing that I belong romantically to someone but he only wants to possess me in one way even if I don't let him... Just last night we talked about it, after he gave me a huge diamond as an early wedding present" Meredith widened her eyes hearing the words of the girl in front of her "A diamond did you say?" what a stupid question "Yes, a very rare diamond that belonged to Louis XVI, I think..." continued Rose not understanding Meredith's "Yes, I know" what? "You know what?" Rose asked confused "I know that... that to be such a huge and expensive diamond it could have belonged to a royal like Louis XVI" Rose nodded in response and Meredith swallowed for fear of being discovered because of her too many questions "Well Meredith, this is just to tell you that my life is a real mess... sometimes I'd rather be like one of those third class girls and live a real life" sighing Rose finally looked at the girl in front of her "Anyway dear Meredith, I have to go get ready for dinner, then we'll see later".
In the evening Meredith found herself back in her cabin fixing her hair and makeup, opting for a purple dress that highlights her long blonde hair.
It was now very late for dinner so she decided to go downstairs just to have a glass of champagne and smoke a cigarette in the light of the many stars. She left the room and headed towards the stairway that leads to the dining room which is now almost empty due to the time. Meredith walked over to the counter in the bar area ordering a glass of dry champagne when a voice to her right distracted her "Miss Moore, right?" a strangely familiar male voice asks her "Yes right, who am I talking to?" Maredith asked continuing to look at the glass instead of the man next to her "Officer Lightoller, I checked your ticket yesterday...why are you here alone Miss?" the girl scrutinized him with her big blue eyes leaving him petrified by how much confidence her body and her gaze emanated "I came down too late for dinner and I was longing for a drink, do you want something too, officer?" she asked him "Oh no thanks Miss I'm not allowed to drink while I'm working" he replied smiling "Oh no? But flirting with first class women is allowed..." the man boldly approached the girl in front of him telling her :"Only if is as beautiful as you, Miss Moore" Meredith smiled, knowing where the officer was getting at... She'd heard a lot of phrases like that in her life, it was nothing new "You'll think the same when you find out my age, huh Mr lightoller?" the girl's grin made the officer so uncomfortable that made him pushed away from her "Husband?" he asked again "No husband, I'm a free girl you know?" Meredith answered crossing her legs, a gesture that certainly does not go unnoticed by the man in front of her "For now, yes... and lucky who will be" the girl smiled again at the officer's comment "Your wife? Would she be pleased to know you are flirting with a very young girl, Mr Lightoller?" the blonde with a nod of the head referred to the wedding ring that the man wore on his left hand "I guess not, Charles" the girl downed the last drop of champagne and stood up from the chair at the counter "Keep the looks you do at me for your wife. Goodnight Mr Lightoller" and with a smile Meredith left the man motionless making him follow her with his eyes until she exited the room.
