The next morning, the lady was making breakfast for us, I sat next to Jisu, resting my head against her shoulder.
The speaker in the corner of the room started crackling and a voice came through. "Ah, ah." They said, trying to see if it's working. "Is this working?" I got up and walked towards the speaker and started to listen to what they had to say. "If there are any survivors, take any food, medicine, weapons and come down to the first floor, it's safe now and it'll be safer if we're all together, if we all stick together, so please come down. I repeat-." The speaker had cut out, crackling again.
I glanced around at everyone, wondering what our next move is going to be. Jisu grabbed her bat and Jae-Heon took his sword and walked towards the door. "You really believe that announcement?" Du-Sik said, "you can't trust it."
"We'll be ok." Jisu said.
"Thank you for everything, sir." Jae-Heon said, "may God bless you."
"I'm a Buddhist." Du-Sik said. Jae-Heon looked down at his feet awkwardly and I fought the urge to laugh at the awkwardness.
"Well, if the first floor is safe, we'll come back for you." Jisu said.
Du-Sik shook his head. "Don't make promises you can't keep." He said, "so, let's just say farewell."
"Someone once told me that even in the thickest darkness disappears with the faintest light." Jisu said.
"Is that person still alive?" Du-Sik asked.
"Um, I'm not sure."
They turned towards the door but I got up. "I'm coming with you." I told them, grabbing my fan off the counter. "Me too." Hyunsoo said, also following us.
Jae-Heon and Jisu nodded and opened the door and we walked out.
I followed Jisu down the stairs, Hyunsoo behind me, holding his staff out ready for an attack. "Are you sure it's ok to go down here like this?" Jisu whispered, "we should probably get something useful."
We all have weapons in our hands, but I agree with her, it isn't enough.
Jae-Heon slowed down his steps as he looked down at the ground. Blood was spluttered everywhere and I swallowed nervously as I saw the dead person up against the wall. "Oh my god." I whispered, more to myself.
"I'm thankful to see a corpse." Jae-Heon mumbled as he stepped pass the dead body and so did Jisu and Hyunsoo. I stayed on the other side of it. Jisu went to touch his neck and then pulled away slowly. "He's still warm." She told us, "he hasn't been dead for long."
Shit. The monster is probably still here.
Jisu dug into his pocket and pulled out a chocolate bar and threw it to Hyunsoo and he stared at her. "Put it back if you don't want it." She said and then walked past the guy and down the stairs. We all followed her. Jisu in front, Jae-Heon behind her, me behind Jae-Heon and Hyunsoo behind me. We all moved down in a line.
A loud bang was heard and Hyunsoo gasped. I turned around quickly to see him falling off the railing. "Hyunsoo!" I screamed. I wanted to do something to save him, but I couldn't and I hate myself for it.
He landed with a thud and blood started pouring out of his head. "Fuck!" I cried and ran down the stairs with tears running down my cheeks.
I took threes steps at a time to get to him faster. But I wasn't fast enough.
Once I had reached him, I checked his pulse. It was slowing down, and he was getting cold. "Someone help!" I screamed and banged on the door continuously. "Please! Help!" I started sobbing and ran back to Hyunsoo and placed his head in my lap. "You're gonna be ok, I promise." I cried, wiping away my tears.
The door opened and a guy with glasses stood in front of a crowd who were peeking over his shoulder. "Please help him." I cried.
