My first work here, and to experiment with the "me"-perspective. You can expect other stories from me over the time.

I forgot Earth

Story by S. Houtermans

I can still remember it. The cold breeze going trough my face. My lungs filled with clean air. I opened my eyes and saw a lone tree on a great plain. A plain with grass, where you could see the wind gazing trough it. A blue sky, filled with bird-alikes. Two moons, closer than ours on Earth, high up in the sky. I could not remember Earth. The planet filled with smoke and acidic gases were I was born. A star, much smaller than ours, still giving me warmth. Animals, living peacefully with each other, grazing on the endless plains.

Chapter One: The Arrival

A buzzing sound waked me. The clock. I opened my eyes, threw the sheet off me and stood up. The sun shone trough the blinds.

I moved my hand trough my hair, which was probably a mess. I moved on to the mirror. My sleepy face appeared in it, with an unshaved beard. I splashed some fresh water in my face and looked again. I was ready for a new day.

The smell of coffee could be smelled trough the whole station, probably the daily coffee-time. I headed toward the hall and looked around me. The interior resembled me of those temporary home containers where workers could sleep in. Only this was way bigger then just containers.

I sat down soon on a chair in the kitchen. There she was, making fresh coffee for the whole crew. Aylee, the crew specialist, or mostly called “Coffee bean” due her coffee-brown hair and her skill for making the best coffee here.

“Well, you’re looking tired.” She said to me.

“You just found that out, Sherlock? This is my first day… first day not on Earth.” I replied. She grinned and turned toward the coffee machine. “We’ve got a call, by the Colony. They'd like to welcome us here.”

I smiled, partially because I wanted to see the lifestyle here with my own eyes. Going to this place was a great wish of me, since I was a kid. I heard stories about the endless plains and the clean air, and I loved nature by then.

I opened my backpack and grabbed some stuff out of it. Vacuum pre-packed peanuts, Work-PDA, sunglasses, toothpaste, a photo of my wife and daughter, and some electronic stuff. I closed my backpack and went outside. Outside, into the fresh air.
