The mindscape, at least the dark side's mindscape, was empty, cold, detached and quiet. It was everything the other mindscape was not. It wasn't inviting, bright, colourful, it wasn't home. It didn't bring Virgil any happy memories.

"I didn't think I'd see you stepping back on this side."

Deceit - Janus.

"I'm not staying for long." Virgil cut to the chase, not inviting the other for a conversation he didn't want to have.

"Why come back?" Janus stepped out of the shadows, where the moonlight peered through the window. His scales were on full display, his bowler hat in perfect place, and his capelet clean and smooth.

"Does it matter?" Virgil looked around, questioning if it did matter.

"Perhaps." Making no eye contact with the other, the snake checked his gloves as if inspecting them.

"I thought - ... I'm not getting into this." As he turned to leave, he stopped hearing Janus continue his thought.

"Thought you might find a shred of happiness, comfort..." There was a pause of silence, and he continued. "We had something here - something real."

"No. We didn't." Virgil ground his teeth together, back turned to the liar, staring at the door.

"We could have been happy. We were ha-"

"No! YOU - You  were happy." Virgil spun, his eyes full of tears, as he pointed an accusatory finger at Janus. "You didn't care for what I wanted - you never did, and never will - that will never change. I destroyed myself so you couldn't hurt me." His breath came in rapid bursts, trying to calm down. "I stayed when I should have left, and all for you - not once..." Virgil broke down crying in anger for his neglect, robbed of being treated as an equal. "I deserved better - I didn't know it then, but I know it now - I will never forgive you." Virgil turned to leave, a place he never called home.

"A spider's web is stronger than it looks. Although it may be thin,

delicate strands, the web is not easily broken."
