That's as far as I can go until my thoughts are interupted. Slowly I open my eyes, only to find a glimmer of bright green eyes looking down at me.
The boy lifts his hands to his forehead to push his golden curls out of his face, which only accentuates his eyes even more.
Those Eyes.
I don't know what it is about them but it makes me forget everything. For one second I don't have to fight the pain that is building up in my chest.
After what feels like forever, I finally manage to stutter a few words.
,,W-What? What did you say?" Is all I can think of.
,,I asked you if you were okay." The boy repeats without taking his eyes off me. It feels like he is staring into my soul.
,,You were crying." He explains.
I was crying? Why would I-
And in that moment every memory from this day comes flooding back to me.The fire.
My sister.
Dead.I look around the waiting room. The hospital is crowded and my parents are nowwhere to be seen.
Are they still with her? Why couldn't I say goodbye?Somehow my eyes find there way back to him.
,,My sister died."
His face darkens at my response.
After a few seconds of just standing there shocked, he sits down beside me.
,,I'm sorry." He says, so quietly it's almost like a whisper.
Desperate to fill the silence between us, i turn my head and ask him ,, And you? Why are you here?"
,, My mom is in that room over there." he answers while pointing with his finger to the left side of the hall.
,,Was she in the fire too?"
,,Yes." Is all he says.Just two hours ago my parents received a phone call. Panicked they pulled me into the car and drove us to the hospital. Only then they told me what happened.
,,Meave, there was a big fire at your sisters work. She's dead."
My dads voice was cold and broken. He couldn't even look me in the eye.
My older sister was everything to me.
She made me laugh when I was sad.
Defended me when someone was mean to me.
She was my best friend.
And suddenly she was gone.,,Will your mother be okay?" I ask the boy that is still sitting beside me.
,,I don't know. My dads talking to the doctors."
,,I'm sure she'll make it."
I wish I could comfort him, so I didn't have to think about what I was feeling at the moment.
,,Where are your parents?"
,,They're saying goodbye to my sister." I tell him, as if we'd known each other forever. Somehow I trust him.
,,Why are you not with them?" He looks so confused.
,,They told me to wait here. Said I couldn't handle seeing her like this. I wish-"
I'm not able to finish that sentence because a distressed man appears in front of us.
,, Jasper. They say she won't make it. You should say goodbye." The cold voice startles both of us.
My eyes wander to the boy beside me. Jasper.
His tear filled eyes find their way to me. I can see the shock in his face.
I don't know what to say. How can I take away his pain?
,,I'm so sorry." Is all I manage to whisper. I can feel the tears streaming down my face.
With one final look in my direction he stands up and follows his father.
And that was it.
I'll never see him again.
For a few minutes I didn't feel so alone in this world.
But without his presence I am lost.
Lost in the loss of my sister. It comforts me a little to know that at least we have this in common. That I wasn't the only one.
We both lost someone we loved today.
