Lavender's fingers were flying robotically for the vegetables; here mind was on her mum. Mum had looked like absolute shit as Kyle and the driver had half carried her out to the taxi.
Tracy Ferry, Ellis's mother, came to see her as soon as Mr Robinson went back to his office.
'I was workin' near ya mum.' Tracy had edgy, scurrying eyes. 'I think she passed out. It wasn' jus' an accident.'
That made Lavender feel 10 times worse. Mum hadn't been well yesterday, and although she'd downplayed it this morning, it would have been much better if they'd stayed in bed. They should have known that a all the bending and lifting needed to carry food and drinks out was too heavy a job for mum when she was feeling ill. Lavender would have been even more distraught if it hadn't been Kyle who'd taken her mum to the hospital.
He'd whispered to her: 'I'll make sure she's alright.'
She could trust Kyle to do his best for them, but Mr Robinson had been displeased and made more so by Kyle going against his orders. It was the very last thing he should have done, especially for her mother. It would only create more trouble.
After that, it was distressing to go on working as if nothing f had even happened. It felt like a lifetime until the lunch hour came and the restaurant shut down for an hour. Usually she and mum walked home to get something to eat. Today Lavender decided she must go to the hospital to see how she was.
But she found out she didn't need to. Kyle was waiting for her on the corner of viv street with a McDonald's brown bag.
'How's my mum?'
'Can we go up to your flat to eat? I'll tell you on the way baby.'
'Yeah yeah course we can babe. Is she okay then?'
'Lav, I'm sorry but it's not just her hand. They think she might have appendicitis.' Kyle bit his lip.
Lavender began to breathe fast 'oh my god!'
'I..''A doctor examined her. She's to stay in under observation for a few days. If her appendix doesn't settle down, he'll have to operate on Friday.'
'Oh god! What- what about her hand?'
'It's a pretty bad cut, I'm sorry. She's had to have 11 stitches in it. I told the nurse you'd be at work till six. She wants you to go round after that and take her jammas in.'
'I'll..I'll put a few things together for her now. I'm scared Kyle, it's gunna be a while before she can work again.'
Lavender turned the kettle on to make them a cup of tea to have with the McDonald's. She felt even more fearful about mum. Illness equalled costs. Mum lived in fear from it. They both knew how easy it was to get into debt.
'I just hope she going to be okay, babe.' She said as she nuzzled into Kyle's neck.
