Ellis threw himself onto his bed fully clothed. It came again, the evident sound of footsteps in the flat above. It filled him with rage that Kyle Robinson dared to go up to Lavender's home when he knew she was all alone there.
'Just shows you how much of a tramp she is,' his mother had seethed. Her manner was often like this, infuriated and restless at the same time. She had thick eyebrows that went up and down as she spoke, particularly when she was annoyed.
'Only a whore would take him upstairs like that when her mothers in hospital.'
Ellis clenched his jaw. He knew what Kyle was doing with his girl. Robinson didn't give a fuck about her well-being. It pained Ellis to think of what he was doing.
All evening he couldn't keep still. Half of him was listening for a scream. Wondering if she needed help to get rid of Kyle.
He'd heard it said at the restaurant that Kyle was a ladies man. That Lavender seemed all too willing to accept his attention didn't help at all.
He was unable to remain still; he even thought of going up and throwing Kyle out. Clara would want him to take care of her daughter. Perhaps he should? He clenched and unclenched his fists as he tried to make up his mind what to do.
Mum's bedroom was right next to his, so she could hear him. She poked her head into his room, to check on him. She had fine wavy blonde hair, which was long and half was pulled back to keep hair out of her face.
'For fuck sake, Ellis, lie the fuck down and go to sleep, your really passing me of now,' she said heatedly.
Feeling guilty because he was keeping her awake, he went to lie down on his narrow bed.
'Forget about that slut. It's really none of your business what she does.'
Ellis ft like it was though. He couldn't cut himself off from Lavender.
He lay awake most of the night worrying about her.
Kyle was using her. Having sex with her when Ellis had been so careful not to force her into anything like that until they could afford to marry. It showed how little consideration Kyle held for her.
Lavender was beautiful. Her shabby clothes showed her slim figure, just thinking about her made him need her, she made him hard. She only had to smile to make him feel a physical craving for her.
He didn't doubt she'd cast the same spell on Kyle, but he'd had no self-control.
Ellis felt fury boiling up inside of him. Kyle was the sort of twat that could have anything he wanted. Everything came easy to him.
Ellis had always had a very definite idea about what he wanted from life. He'd had his future all planned out ahead of him.
He'd meant to marry Lavender Fray and make a better life for her and his mother, at least better than they'd had so far.
He'd known he had nobody to depend upon but himself, and known, too, how Robinson's restaurant had been started by Kyle's grandparents. He thought he might do the same; make money by making his own brand, he'd make a variety of dips and sauces which his grandmother taught him to make.
His problem had always been how to set it up. He couldn't afford to rent premises like those in which he worked, but he'd need something alike. For years he'd been thinking the idea over. He knew what he needed; the real obstacle was the money to set it all up, and how to sell what he'd made.
He'd tried his hardest to get Kyle to talk about how he sold the food they made. He'd listened excitedly to all he said, asked loads of questions, tried to pick up all the guidance he could. If the Robinson's could do, he could do it too.
