Lavender spent the afternoon feeling concerned. The air in the restaurant seemed rigid. Michael Robinson spent spent more time that usual in the kitchens, looking more severe than he normally did and finding flaws with everything.
She was glad when she was finished for the night and was free to go and see her mum.
'Shall I come with you?' Kyle wanted to know. He'd been hanging around Lavender since he got back. 'They won't let you stay long, it isn't visiting time. I'll wait for you if you like.'
How could she say no to that? She wanted Kyle with her.
She needed somebody to lean on now mum was sick.
Lavender saw the nurse. She was warned mum might still need an operation, but she'd had a comfortable afternoon. She was allowed to see her for a few moments.
Mum was sleeping as she walked up the long line of beds.
Her face was grey against the starkly white pillows; her injured hand was bandaged up. Mum had always put on a good act.
She seemed more worried about how the 'onion king' had taken the breakage of so many glasses than she did about the diagnoses of her own illness. The thought of a few days rest had helped her.
Kyle was waiting for Lavender outside. He took her hand to walk her home. It was hard to believe something as incredible as this could be happening at the same time as something so horrible for mum. She tingled everywhere at the thought of being alone with Kyle in the privacy of her home. He'd been there already in the lunch hour, but then they'd both known their time together was limited, and they'd had to eat.
'I'm hungry,' Kyle said. 'Can we get fish and chips or something?'
'I made some lamb stew yesterday. Mum won't be wanting her share.' There was some scones in the fridge as well.
Kyle seemed at home in their living room. He stirred the pan of stew as it warmed up on the hob, while she set the table for their meal. It seemed very strange to see him in mum's place. He congratulated her on her cooking and laughed because the cabbage was not Robinson's but a rival brand.
'It's cheaper,' Lavender explained. 'That's why mum buys it.'
Afterwards, Lavender sat on Kyle's knees while he wrapped his arms around her, they watched friends on TV together. Lavender had known he wouldn't want to go home. She tried to persuade him, she was scared that his dad would be fuming with both of them if he didn't.
'I haven't sorted my shit out with him yet, and to be honest Lav I don't really want to.'
'You ignored his orders in front of everyone.'
'Don't remind me. They'd be more trouble if I went home now. It's better to give it time to fade from fathers mind. Let it die down.'
Kyle's arms grabbed her chest, she pulled his hands of of her and turned around to face him. She wrapped her legs around his back and he wrapped his arms around her. 'I don't want to leave you baby, this is perfect. Could never have expected this to happen.'
Then he kissed her. His lips were lusciously smooth against hers.
'Don't send me away' he pouted. 'We have the flat alone, let's not let it go to waste.'
The last thing Lavender wanted to do was send him away. She felt his erection press into her thigh. She pressed her body closer, moulding it to his. Everything felt perfect. She forgot the outside world, forgot mum; nothing mattered but Kyle, his lips, his body, his.. Everything. She stood up, grabbed his hands, she dragged him to her bed.
Lavender thought of that Tuesday as a horrible day of suspense and worry about mum, but of pure ecstasy and delight with Kyle.
