Guy Germaine POV:
"Luis, Luis.." Ms. MacKay gently shook Luis who was passed out on his desk.
"Sorry.." He replied as he slowly opened his eyes.
"Dean, could you please tap Indiana and wake her?" She asked.
"You should leave her." Fulton told her.
She gave them a confused look as she waited for an explanation.
"Yeah, Coach has been extra hard on her for some reason." Jesse added.
She game a sympathetic frown and sighed.
"How much sleep are you all getting?" She asked.
"Depends." Charlie said "5 or 6 hours?"
Her jaw dropped and she looked mad.
"When does coach have you guys practicing?" She asked, not sure if she even wanted to know the answer.
"Coach? Ha! You mean captain blood?" Averman scoffed. "He has us practicing at 6 every morning, then after we have class, then at night till like 10 or 11. Some nights we aren't even getting to bed till 12."
She pursued her lips then asked if we had practice after that session. When we answered yes, she looked furious.
"You guys are not to go to practice after class." She demanded. If only it were that easy.
"I don't think coach would appreciate us not showing up." Dwayne chimed in.
"I will deal with him. I'm cutting class short today. I want you all to rest for the rest of the day." Everyone sighed in relief and began to get up to go rest in the dorms.
I walked over to Indie to get her up to go back to the dorms.
"Is class over?" She asked all disoriented.
"Yeah, Ms.MacKay cut it short. She said not to go to practice today and just to rest." Indies face relaxed further and she was so relieved.
"She is an Angel." Indie commented while getting up. "I cannot even walk straight."
I slung an arm around her and walked her to her dorm. Once we made it to the dorm she threw off her jacket and she crawled into bed. I started to walk out of the room to go sleep in my bed, but Indie stopped me.
"You wanna...just sleep in here? I mean you're already in here anyway so..." she suggested while looking down at her hand. I let out an airy laugh and went to go lay next to her. "Hey, Y'know when you're so tired that you literally don't feel real?"
I laughed at her as she rambled on about how nothing felt real.
"I think you need to sleep." I teased.
"I think you're right." She fell asleep as soon as she closed her eyes. She had always been a peaceful sleeper. She slept with her mouth open. Not wide open, but open enough for you to see the bottom half of her two front teeth. Her eyes weren't squinted shut but they were closed softly. She had worn her glasses that day because she couldn't be bothers to put her contacts in that morning.
She forgot to take them before falling asleep so I slipped them off her face and put them on the side table.
Ever since the day we kissed, everything felt different. Not bad different but not really good different either. Just different. It was like there was this tension in the air. An elephant in the room that neither one of us would address.
I thought all week about how to address it but I just couldn't. I was too scared to talk to her about it. I mean, I just got her back and I don't want to do anything to mess it up again. But then again, if I don't talk to her about it I might lose her anyway.
I also felt like it would be putting too much on her. She was already so stressed about so much. Bombay was treating her really badly and she was all worked up about her dad and his girlfriend, I just thought it would be too much to put on her. I didn't mind though. I was content with just being around her. Being her friend. And, maybe, just maybe in the future, we could be something more.
While thinking of all this I had ended up falling asleep.
——
About a few later I woke up and looked over to Indie, who wasn't awake yet. She had changed position in her sleep and was no longer on her back, but was on her side with her knees to her chest and her arms resting on her chest. She had woken up a few minutes later and had a look of sadness on her face. She sat up in bed and leaned against the headboard.
"Morning, sleeping beauty." I teased. She gave me a faint smile then looked down. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." I could tell she was lying.
"When are you gonna learn that I can see right through you?" I asked. She laughed then began to get up.
"I just had a weird dream. That's all." She sounded more sincere that time.
"Oh, wanna talk about it?" I asked while looking over at her.
"No, I'm okay. It was just a dream." She reassured while going over to her drawer to get out some clothes to change into. "Wanna go the the pier or something?" She asked.
"Yeah. With who?" I asked.
"I was thinking maybe it could be just us." She suggested. "Or, if you don't want to that's fine-"
"No. No I wanna go. It'll be fun." She smiled at me then went into her bathroom to get dressed. I waited for her to get out and just thought about how pathetic I was. She had the guts to ask me on a "date" before I did. But that's how she was. Strong willed. Straight forward. And independent. And her being independent made it feel really special to me. I mean, Indie could have easily went to the pier alone. She would have probably liked being alone, but she wanted me to go with her. It was a nice feeling.
