It was over. The ring was destroyed. Frodo watched Sam that was weakly cheering him to grab his hand. He was swaying over the not so stable bridge that he managed to grab when he and Gollum fell over the edge, trying to win over the ring. But now, all the memories, memories of Shire, grass, trees and happy little hobbits came through the unbearable darkness his mind was filled with the past couple days, weeks or even maybe months. He didn't know, he lost track of time a long time ago. But now, it didn't matter, all that mattered is that the ring was destroyed.
He felt hot tears on the top of his head and when he looked up there was him, one and only Sam who came with him through literal hell. Without his Sam he wouldn't have made it. Sam was reaching out but sobbing uncontrollably. Frodo didn't know at that moment if it was from sadness, grief, pain, worry or maybe even happiness from completing their quest.
The smaller hobbit gathered all his strength trying to get hold of Sam's hand. Sam pulled him back on the bridge. The whole Mordor was collapsing and even the great mountain of Mount Doom couldn't bare the evil that has spread to it's fires from The Ring. It started firing and the bridge started to collapse.
Frodo wasn't really present by any mean but Sam was very conscious..or was he? He tried to use the privilege of still holding the brunettes hand. He didn't know how much energy is left in his master but he didn't want to just drag him on the floor of this doubtful spiky bridge however, he himself didn't have much to gather seeing as he for the last few days gave Frodo every last bit of everything they had. Even Sam was lost somewhere deep inside trying to help for the milionth time without anything to help with, at this point, he didn't have anything.
Suddenly something tugged on his hand. He was so lost in his thoughts on how to save them he didn't realize in what serious danger they were already. He looked up to see Frodo trying to get him up and run away from the depths of whatever hell they were in right now. As they ran the bridge was falling right behind them straight to the bubbling lava.
The exhausted hobbits laid on a rock, magma running down the mountain into the torn lands of Mordor. Both of them quiet until Frodo started to hum Bilbo's old rhyme.
"Farewell we call to hearth and hall!
Though wind may blow and rain may fall,
We must away ere break of day
Far over wood and mountain tall.To Rivendell, where Elves yet dwell
In glades beneath the misty fell,
Through moor and waste we ride in haste,
And whither then we cannot tell. With foes ahead, behind us dread,
Beneath the sky shall be our bed,
Until at last our toil be passed,
Our journey done, our errand sped.We must away! We must away!
We ride before the break of day! ",,So, I guess this is the end, Mr. Frodo," Sam trutfully told, his voice breaking half through. ,,like in the big stories..."
,,It's maybe the end for us but with every end comes a new start, with every death a new life my dear Sam" Frodo laid beside Sam, eyes closed with a slight smile on his bruised face.
,,But thankfully to this, Middle Earth can continue living a peaceful life once again and it can see new, good times. And even if not for us, I'm happy that others can be happy and live without having their lives filled with everyday fear. And I'm ever so greatful I can be here with you..at the end of everything, Samwise Gamgee."
They were silent. Both in their own worlds far away from Mount Doom, far away from Mordor, away from Middle Earth.
Frodo was so caught up in his mind, he didn't even notice the blond's hand slipping into his. To be honest at this point, they were used to this kind-of scenario. But now Sam was looking with watery eyes, face dirty from the explosion at Frodo interlocking their fingers for the first time of the many many times they held hands, waiting for the brunette to notice and look at him as well.
Frodo saw the pain in Sam's eyes and even though he was compeltely finally free of the burden (or so he thought), Sam was in pain. That was for sure. But there was something other in his eyes. Something Frodo couldn't quite make out.
,,Mr. Frodo?"
,,Yes Sam?"
,,I 'ave been meaning to tell you something.."
,,Yes, I can tell that, you know you can tell me anything." Frodo said gaving Sam slight comforting smile.
,,Well...seeing as our lifes are most probably coming to an end.." the younger hobbit started but as tears were blurring his vision and the lump in his throat formed he stopped, sighed and tried to continue, ,,you were always there for me, made me smile even at my worst and you are the most genuine and smart hobbit I've ever seen and so so pretty as well and I didn't know how to tell you because I'm sure you don't feel the same and didn't want to ruin out frienship and I know a simple gardener like me doesn't deserve you Mr. Frodo but before death will tear us apart I just...I love you Mr. Frodo" Sam exhaled, thankful this was over and that he told him the truth but also afraid of Frodo's reaction. He wished nothing but for everything to be back to normal.
He looked down waiting for an answer or even a reaction from his friend which sat there frozen in time.
Suddenly the brunette snapped his head at Sam who nearly jumped at the sudden motion but at least it made him look back at Frodo who quickly grabbed Sam, stopping for a second slowly caressing his cheek with a slight smirk. And then, it all happened at once.
Frodo put the other arm around the others neck, pulling him into a delicate but passionate kiss. At that moment, everything around them disappeared. Every fear, every danger, every pain, there was nothing. Just them. The kiss felt perfect, it felt..just right.
Even though Sam was still crying through it all, even he himself didn't know why in fact was he crying but it all happened too quickly for him to care.
When they pulled back from exhaustion, grasping for air, their bodies felt limp as they laid back at the unwelcoming rock, their vision starting to black out.
The last thing Sam could hear was Frodo wishpering.
,,Oh Sam.. I love you too...more than anything."
And then the world went black.
