Choosing Self-Preservation: Protecting My Heart from Those Who Don't Deserve It

In shadows cast by weary, weary souls,
I shield my heart from piercing pain's cruel tolls.
For why should I unfurl this fragile core,
To ones who pass me by and nothing bore?

Their words float lightly on the winds of scorn,
While I remain within my fortress born.
No longer will I chase their hollow gaze,
Or walk the path of futile, empty praise.

For love should not be wasted on the blind,
Whose callous hearts remain forever confined.
I'll guard my spirit, precious and serene,
Embracing worth and those who see unseen.

No longer shall their apathy hold sway,
As I find solace in my self-made bay.
Within the silence of my guarded heart,
I'll flourish, bloom, and strive to find my art.

For only those who cherish love's true flame,
Shall have the privilege to whisper my name.
No more shall I be shackled by deceit,
For I deserve a love that's pure and sweet.

So let the ones who don't care pass me by,
I'll spread my wings, 'neath the open sky.
In time, I'll find the ones who truly see,
And with open hearts, we shall love fiercely.
