courtney

it was now november 3rd, the day before the reunion. she picked out a nice light brown and white sweater, that was just a little too big for her, with a collared shirt underneath and jeans.
the only thing she now has on her mind was duncan. she was worried if he wouldn't recognise her, or if she would recognise him, or if he would come at all.

after sitting on her bed looking at her outfit for a while, she saw a photo coming out of the left pocket on the jeans. she reached over to grab it and it was a small, polaroid photo of them hugging at a park in winter, taken by heather. she flipped the photo to the back and it had duncan's handwriting saying: "us, forever" and a heart sloppily drawn in pen. her eyes glazed as she remembered that day. it was a week before christmas and they were out on their way to go ice skating together, when they saw heather and she took a photo of them. she started going back to that day, missing it more than anything.

she felt the cold breeze on her nose as her and duncan were walking down the path made of rocks. she was holding his left hand, trying to keep hers warm. in his right hand was holding some hot chocolate that him and courtney were sharing. it was lightly snowing and you could hear the mixed crunching of rocks and snow on the ground.

"i'm so cold." courtney spoke.
duncan turned to the brunette and smiled. "want me to help?"
she nodded and felt a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. he hugged her tightly, and even under the layers she could still feel his warmth travelling to her. he placed a kiss on her forehead before letting go.
"is that better now?" he asks.
courtney nods and grins from ear to ear. it was moments like these that she adored and cherished.
"hey! courtney, duncan!" they hear a familiar voice call out.
they see heather running up to them, handing them the photo.
"you guys looked cute. cheesy but cute."
courtney smiled. "thanks"
they waved goodbye to each other and duncan and courtney continued their journey to the ice rink.
"show me that photo, princess" he asks her. she hands him the photo.

"that-thats actually pretty cute

"that-thats actually pretty cute. do you have a pen?" duncan questions.
"yeah, i always carry one to add and remove things from my to do list." she then hands him the pen and he flips the photo over and writes, 'us, forvever'
courtney felt her heart flutter and blushed, regardless of being cold. she gave him a kiss and they continued walking out onto the road across from the rink.

courtney felt tears run down her cheeks as her lip quivered. she forgot she had this photo of them, and now seeing it years later it made her heart shatter. she remembered the pure look in his eyes, the warmth of the hug and the comforting smile he gave her. she couldn't believe he would throw that all away for gwen. gwen!!! she decided to put the photo back in the pocket to hold the memory with her, even though it hurt.

a few hours had passed and she was now getting ready for sleep. she always went to sleep at 11pm to make sure she could get enough sleep, no matter when she would have to wake up. she had that feeling in her stomach, the one you get before going on a rollercoaster, or seeing your crush, or the night before christmas. she left her kitchen with a glass of water and placed it on her bedside table, along with her phone and planner. no matter how hard she tried to fall asleep, she couldn't. that feeling was eating her alive. she stood up and went over to her chair where she had hung the clothes over the edge and took the photo out and looked at it once more. it felt so bittersweet.

"us, forever"

i wish we were forever.
