"Stefan?" Elena mumbled, bringing her hands to her neck. "Ah, has Prince Charming come to rescue me? Damon's dead and Stefan - the hero - thinks he can come sweep up the mess."
"It's really a pleasure to see you like this, Elena, you know; first Kai kidnaps you, then he kills Damon, now he's gone. He's probably off on some cruise ship, toasting to his victory." Stefan sighed sadly, chewing on his lower lip. "But, none of that will affect you, right? You took the easy way out and left the rest of us to pick up the mess."
"Right, because when that flip is switched, I don't have to worry about all of this...shit. That's what it is, Stefan, it's all shit." Elena cackled darkly, sitting up. "Funny, now that I don't have emotions, I know how I feel."
Stefan narrowed his eyes as Elena's eyes glazed over in concentration. "What do you feel?"
Elena snapped out of her daze, "well, I don't feel anything, isn't that the plus side of being a vampire? You feel so much, but you can turn it of like-" she snapped her fingers "-that."
"Not really. You can't just not feel, not anymore. It's a perk of being a new vampire. That first time you turned of you're humanity you were new - no offense, but you're old now. You can't just turn off everything." Stefan's voice was cold and emotionless, and he swallowed a full bottle of alcohol from Damon's shelf.
"You did," Elena pointed out with a smirk. "Remember? You didn't feel anything."
Stefan was silent.
"You didn't care who you killed or who it would affect," Elena stood up and walked across the room towards Stefan. "You didn't care about me or Damon. You were selfish. For decades you didn't care about him-"
"That's where you're wrong, Elena, I never stopped caring about him - never will. He's my brother."Stefan paused, his voice strained and uncomfortable. "I'm doing this for him. Once you have your humanity back, then I'm gone. I should have never came back, then he wouldn't be dead."
"Should I have brought streamers for you're pity party? Maybe invited a couple people?" Elena's face twisted up in an overexcited grin. "Remember the last party I had? Before you decided that bringing my humanity back was a good idea."
Stefan rolled his eyes, realizing that nothing was getting through to her.
He wanted to care, but he couldn't. Elena was bringing up the past, which always including Damon, and it hurt too much. It hurt to think that Damon would only be a part of the past.
"Where is Kai, anyway?" Elena asked, her voice coming out a little more curious than she would have liked. "I mean, this is his fault."
Stefan didn't notice her little slip up - too overwhelmed with grief and anger.
"Don't know, don't care."
"Stefan Salvatore doesn't care? Which one of us has their humanity off again?" Elena questioned. She sent him a playful grin but he continued to stare deeply at the coffee table.
"Knock, knock, knock!" An all-too-Caroline voice cood from the front door. She was wearing a light pink dress, and her makeup was smeared under her eyes; a little white bag clasped between her fingers.
Caroline looked them both over nervously, her lips pursed together in a forced smile. "I brought donuts and bagels!"
"Oh, right, 'sorry-you-lost-you're-boyfriend-in-the-oblivion-got-him-back-then-got-kidnapped-by-the-same-psychopath-witch-that-was-trapped-there-with-him-and-finally-losing-him-again-permanently-and-switching-off-you're-humanity donuts." Elena mocked bitterly. "Classy Caroline."
"You're different," Caroline announced, narrowing her eyes and moving closer. She looked to Stefan, "she's different."
"My humanity is turned off, what do you expect?" Elena snapped, falling back into the couch, with the white bag in her hands. "But this time I'm bored. Last time I had to stop the search for the...uh..."-she paused, digging through the bag-"for the cure."
"No. This is different; you're different." Caroline tried to clarify.
Stefan looked a bit more curious, but didn't say anything.
"You're acting sort of like him...like Kai." Caroline said his name cautiously.
"Wh...what are you talking about?" Stefan finally spoke up, his curiou situ evident. "You think he did something to her?"
"What did he say when he dropped her off?" Caroline asked, trying to piece it together.
"Dropped her off." Elena mocked, stuffing her face with a chocolate donut. She didn't show it, but she was genuinely curious where Kai disappeared to.
"He didn't say much before I tried to kill him. Obviously, after the merge, he escaped." He sighed, quickly loosing interest in the conversation. "Do you think he put a spell or cloak on her or something?"
"I think it's worse than that..." She groaned, her eyes lighting up as she realized what it was, but her smile quickly faded. "I have an idea, but you're not going to like it."
"Caroline Forbes has an idea - how interesting." Elena tossed the bag of treats onto the couch, before standing up. Before she could attempt her escape, Stefan had her neck snapped.
"What's you're idea? I don't think there's really anything that can bring Elena back from this."
"This is crazy, but...we need to find Kai."

Instead of some stupid excuses, I'm just going to tell you my plans for the rest of the story.
My updates will be slow, I'm sorry, but I don't have the time right now. You don't have to keep reading - I'll understand. This story is my priority, though. I wont update my other stories until this one is complete, which will be in a few chapters.
Oh, and sorry for the whole chapter without Kai. ): I miss him too. He'll be back next chapter though, so be ready!
