THIS IS A VERY BAD IDEA, BUT JARED'S EXHAUSTION RUNS BONE-DEEP AT THIS POINT AND HE DOESN'T HAVE THE ENERGY TO IGNORE HER SIREN-CALL ANY LONGER. He can count the hours of sleep in the past week on one hand and knows that the impeccable grades he's maintained throughout his high school career are slipping because of it.
The worst part is, no one seems to care. Sam is deaf to his protests, claiming that his duty should be, first and foremost, to his tribe. The Elders can't seem to figure out why he cares so much; they assure him that they won't allow him to fail as long as he is part of the pack, protecting their people. It doesn't register to them that Jared wants to get good grades so that he could have many options for college. It's his senior year; he doesn't have any time left to make up for it, and the stress is eating him alive.
So when he shifts back to his human form to turn in for the night, muscles aching and head pounding, he doesn't second guess himself as he answers the call.
"Hello beautiful."
He can hear the smile in her voice, and it immediately eases some of the tension between his shoulder blades. "Hello, Jared Cameron."
He misses her. Misses them, his true pack, so much.
There are a million questions he wants to ask, but decides to keep it simple. They haven't spoken for a while, after all, and he doesn't want to overwhelm her. "How are you?"
