CHAPTER 39

When Mathias entered his room, his eyes landed on the terrified looking Detrick, cursing mentally at having forgotten what happened before dinner. "So?" Detrick asked.

"It's alright. Nothing to worry about." Mathias said as he tossed his jacket aside.

"What do you mean nothing? That was a disaster." Detrick tossed his hands out before racking his fingers through his hair, "He needs to learn to keep his mouth shut. All those years, he told no one, and now it's like he had waited for the chance to blab to the world. God, that idiot. It's not as if we are together anymore!"

"Rick, calm down." Mathias said, grabbing his arms to stop his pacing when he was close enough, making tearful eyes turn to him. "Hey, why do you look so scared?"

"I don't trust them. God, He shouldn't have said a thing. They will turn on him."

"Are you more worried about him?" Mathias sighed, shaking his head, "He's the king, worry about yourself for once." Detrick took in a deep breath, letting it out in a stutter as he took a seat on the couch, a hand buried in his hair. Mathias sighed, going to grab the wine carafe and pouring two glasses before going back to the distraught Detrick. "Rick, we talked. They do seem trustworthy enough. Besides, I already warned him about hurting you or putting you at risk."

"I can't wait for us to leave here tomorrow." Detrick said, gulping down the wine before placing the glass on the table.

"Rick..." Mathias frowned.

Detrick turned to him at the tone of his voice, making his frown deepen as he said, "Not you too... please don't tell me you are leaving me behind..."

"I'm not. I promise. I need to fix things with Ax, I need the time to mend things with him." Mathias explained.

"It's my fault isn't it? Why am I so horrible to be around? Why does this shit keep happening to me?" Detrick asked, talking to himself mostly.

"Rick, no. I promise."

"It's just what my life is. Just a horrible cycle of misfortune, and I am at the centre of that. What did I do that was so wrong?"

"Rick, don't get me wrong, I promise, it is not leaving you behind, it is to make things right with the man I love."

"The irony. My father left me. My mother sold me. Andries forgot me. And now you... I should've seen it coming... so why does it still hurt-..."

"That is not true." Mathias said, cupping Detrick's face when he wouldn't look at him, "It's not, Rick. I promise. I love you too much to abandon you. I will be back. This is home. Besides, we made a pact. For Nic, that one of us will always be with him. We can't all go, now can we?"

Before Rick could say a word, they both turned to the hidden door when it slid open, making Detrick get to his feet as Andries slipped in. "No." Detrick said, "No way in hell. I am not in the fucking mindset to deal with you right now!" Detrick said, about to leave when Mathias grabbed his wrist.

"Listen to him, and if you don't like what he says, I will kick him out, promise." Mathias said.

"Don't get involved!" Detrick almost yelled at Mathias, ripping his wrist from his hold, about to leave, but the pause gave Andries enough time to step in his way, stopping him.

"I promise, a minute." Andries said.

"I don't want to hear it! How many times do I have to say we are over?!" Detrick glared, "And you go and do something so damn reckless in front of people I just met! What if I get hung for it? Have you considered that for a moment?"
