time is often described as short. something fleeting. something you can never get enough of.
for hyunjin, he felt like he had far too much. how much longer in the night must he lay awake, staring at the ceiling, trying anything to lull his mind to sleep?
most of the time, no matter how much he waited, that time never came.
so then, the question changed to: how much longer until it's acceptable for him to be up and about?
but time passed slowly in the night. it teased him as it inched by, slower and slower by the minute.
4:31
last time he looked it was already 4:22, and he swore that must have been an hour ago at the least. but clearly, time was taking its time to pass him by.
it was nights like these that were even more painful to him than others. nights that felt like each second was a minute. each minute an hour. and each hour a miserable amount of time that he had to be awake.
sick of the night that slugged past him, hyunjin got up.
painful nights like these were the nights he would go out. just a walk to hopefully clear his fogged brain. or a trip to the convenience store to warm himself up with some instant jjajangmyeon in the autumn nights that grew increasingly cooler.

he faintly heard the familiar bell chime above him as he stepped through the door of the convenience store, muffled by the music playing in his headphones.
his long legs easily sweeping long strides to the jjajangmyeon. hyunjin had been here so many times he could probably walk blindfolded through the layout of the store perfectly.
quickly preparing his food and grabbing a drink to accompany his meal, he made his way to the front of the store to pay, sit, and eat.
he pulled out the appropriate amount of money and set it on the counter along with the items he was purchasing.
"woah, you knew the total before i even rang you up!" hyunjin hadn't looked up from his food the entire time, but even the muffle of his headphones couldn't distract from the unfamiliarity of the young voice that made him slip off his headphones and look up immediately.
behind the counter was not the ahjussi he knew to own the store and work in the nights.
instead, was a boy around his age. his black hair was grown out, but still not quite as long as hyunjin's own. his eyes were filled with a childlike amusement, and his intrigued crooked smile sat perfectly on his face. freckles spread like stars all over his cheeks.
god, how was he so good looking?
hyunjin wasn't the type to just think any guy was attractive. in fact, hyunjin was usually the one that made people seem taken aback by his beauty.
but now he knew what it felt like from the other person's perspective.
"oh, well," hyunjin cleared his throat and started picking up his items from the counter, trying to distract from the fact he definitely stared for a second too long. "i come here a lot and i get the same thing. are you new?"
