Annabeth wanted to cry. She'd been down here before, but it had been with Percy. She didn't want to be down there without him. The long fall down was silent, only interrupted by small sobs or sniffles. Soon, the color changed and brightened into a shade of red.

That's when it hit Annabeth. They didn't have Percy, and at most, Jason could hold maybe three people.

They would be smushed.

She was about to call out when the hole opened, showing the expanse of Tartarus. Caves, mountains, rivers, a weird tower -

A weird tower?

Annabeth squinted her eyes and looked into the distance. She hadn't seen that before.

Suddenly, the demigods fall started to slow. Everyone turned to Jason, only to see him shake his head.

"I'm not the one doing this," he said.

Their fall continued to slow until they softly landed on the ground. They all stood up and brought their weapons out, surveying the surroundings.

"Was it like this last time?" Hazel asked.

Nico and Annabeth both shook their heads.

"No, it's more... peaceful?" Annabeth said, confused.

Nico nodded. "Yeah, we should have at least seen a monster by now."

Piper coughed. "The air here sucks."

Annabeth nodded. "Yeah, we need to make it to the Phlegethon. After we do that, we can follow it and try to find P-"

She choked on the word. "W-we can try and find P-Percy."

Piper walked up to Annabeth. "Hey, what's wrong? Other than the obvious."

"I-we haven't seen him in almost six years. The last he saw of us was us voting for his death. What if - what if he hates us?" Annabeth asked, her mind whirling with bad possibilities.

Piper was about to speak up when she's interrupted.

"Now why would a pretty little thing like you be thinking such depressing thoughts?"

Everyone weapons immediately pointed to the man, and Annabeth whirled around to face him.

That face... looked human, but the eyes... the eyes were swirling voids.

Annabeth wanted to throw up. "Tartarus..." She whispered.

Tartarus nodded. "Yes, that's my name. Don't use it too much."

The demigods stared at him, shocked. The very first monster they came across was a Primordial? They were screwed.

Tartarus laughed at their expressions.

"Don't worry, I'm not here to kill you," he said, laughter somehow in his eyes. "I actually made a promise to NOT murder demigods, so..."

The demigods stayed silent for a moment, but then Leo spoke up. "So, if you're not here to kill us, then why are you here?"

Tartarus grinned. "I'm here to help you."

He reached into a pocket and pulled out a compass, handing it to Annabeth.

"This will show you the way to Percy. Just follow the arrow."

Annabeth stared at it and then looked back up to Tartarus.

She narrowed her eyes. "Are you... helping us? Why?"

Tartarus looked at her and then laughed.

"Because I can. Because I promised to. Because Percy misses you. Because my... siblings will get mad if I don't.  There's many reasons."
