The hours had slipped by swiftly, wrapped in laughter, coffee cups, and the hum of the café. As her shift came to an end. She stood at Jack's doorstep, her heart fluttering with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. It was the first time she had been to his house without him present, and the weight of the moment was not lost on her.

Slipping into the familiar bathroom, she stared at her reflection. The fatigue from the day's work was etched into the lines on her face. She grabbed a handful of water, splashing it onto her cheeks, refreshing herself. With a deep breath, she gently raked her fingers through her hair, tying it into a high ponytail. A touch of chapstick adorned her lips, and she took one last look in the mirror before stepping out.

Just as she emerged from the bathroom, Jack's presence graced the space. "Hey," his voice was a soothing melody, comforting in its familiarity. "I'll just change and be back in two," he added, disappearing into his room.

Emma made her way to the kitchen, pouring herself a glass of orange juice. Her thoughts raced as she anticipated the moments they would share today. Jack returned, their eyes meeting, and together they embarked on an adventure to choose skateboards.

They strolled through the aisles, testing the wheels' spin, laughing like carefree children. Finally, they made their choice, the perfect boards for their escapades. On the journey back, their laughter echoed in the confines of the car, mingling with the soft notes of a favorite song. Conversation flowed effortlessly, ranging from their dreams to their favorite memories.

At a burger joint, they decided to pause for dinner. Seated across from each other, they shared stories and laughter over a meal that tasted like the promise of something beautiful. Then, amidst the glow of the restaurant lights, Jack's words brought a slight tremor to the moment.

"So, tomorrow, I'm leaving for Thailand for a work meeting," he revealed, his gaze on his plate.

Emma's heart skipped a beat, a pang of unexpected disappointment settling within her chest. She composed herself swiftly, not wanting him to see her feelings so clearly. "Oh, for how long?" she asked, her voice gentle.

"Four days," Jack answered, finally looking up at her.

The smile she offered was genuine, though it didn't fully mask her apprehension. "Cool, then have a safe trip."

"We won't be able to see each other for four days, huh?" she said, her smile growing slightly melancholic.

Jack chuckled, his eyes holding a warmth that mirrored her own feelings. "Yes, we've been seeing each other every single day now."

"True," she agreed, a twinkle in her eyes. These moments of togetherness had become an integral part of her life.

As their dinner drew to a close, the realization of their impending separation tugged at her heart. In the quiet intimacy of the car, they shared glances that spoke volumes, words left unspoken in the tender spaces between their silences.

The car pulled up to her front door, and as they lingered in the dim light, Jack pulled her closer, his lips meeting hers in a deep, lingering kiss. It felt like a goodbye kiss, sweet and bittersweet, laden with the promise of their connection. The depth of his kiss sent whispers of uncertainty through Emma's mind.

"Jack, what's wrong? Where are you going?" Her concern was palpable.

He pressed his lips to her forehead, a gesture that had become so familiar between them. "Just on a business trip, sweetheart. You don't have to worry," he reassured her, his smile soft and reassuring.

"I'm just going to miss you a lot," he admitted, his gaze locked onto hers.

Emma's eyes searched his, catching a glimmer of something beneath the surface. "Are you sure?" she inquired, unable to shake her concern.

Jack's grin held a touch of warmth, even amidst the uncertainties. "Yes," he affirmed with a nod.

One last peck on the lips, and he was gone, the car's taillights fading into the distance. Emma watched him drive away, a mix of emotions swirling within her. She sighed softly, "I don't know why, but I could see a hint of doubt and pain in his eyes, or maybe I'm just overthinking things."

With that lingering thought, she turned towards her apartment, her heart carrying the weight of Jack's departure and the unspoken promises they had shared.
