How ironic it was that my lips parted before his and yet the words came out his mouth quicker than mine. I grew annoyed as I failed to take full control of the conversation when the first person to speak made the demands. He managed to seize control by speaking with a loud firm voice.
'' Your admirable work has reached me within days, I was a bit skeptical of the rumors being true that a young woman like you was able to create artificial androids. But when I saw how your androids perfectly lined up and walked into this office with authority all my doubt vanished. This creation of yours is perfectly detailed that I get shivers.
It is alarming that your work has no flaws and the way it perfectly emerges into the dreams and visions that countless good men have tried to bring to life was awakened in your hands. . It baffles me how someone can create artificial androids with so much personality and authority. Does that make sense to you?.
He said with suspicion lingering in his voice and every bone in his body showing me that he was questioning everything that I have built to come this far. This man is more dangerous than I thought. If he sees through that I am in fact not the creator I could be fined with a sentence that would destroy me completely. Time in prison is something that will never cross my path. I can barely imagine that sentence I will receive when the world finds out that I lied about everything and hid androids from a different planet from the authorities.
I could feel the sweat form in my forehead. I stopped myself in my tracks when I was about to wipe the sweat off with my hand, afraid that it would leave a blood stain on my forehead. I used my other hand hoping that it went unnoticed by him.
'' I was not aware that the rumors of my success traveled that fast but I am glad that it reached you within two days. I can understand it is difficult to believe that one can create artificial androids with enough authority and personality to frighten the human mind. But I can assure you that it is all real and imperfections do not rest within my androids. I worked hard to make sure my androids stood out from all the others who tried to create. I suppose you have seen the dull androids who lack everything to be viewed as artificial life.
I said with enough assurance in hope to stop him from continuing questioning me and the creation of my androids. The last thing I could do is to give him an opening to ask another absurd question that would harm me and my reputation. The next words that came out of his mouth made my blood turn cold and turned my face pale when I realized that I was something that needed to be thrown a bone so that he could purchase my androids. The familiar stinging pain that I felt each time I opened my rejection letter consumed me. Here I was in the familiar arms of rejection, the only embrace the world could offer to me.
'' I am going to cut to the chase and offer you a seat for you in a company that I can not disclose the information of yet I am one of the confounders and would like you to work for us after you get your exam diploma. Meanwhile you are focusing on your studies. I would like to gift you, along with one of my important contacts, a penthouse signed in your name. It is located close to this university and provides a bigger space for you and your androids.''
He said with a motionless voice almost as if he memorized these few words. Each time his eyes wandered to my androids and back to mine I noticed how the corner of his lips moved as he waited for my answer. The taunting smile of his made my mind overload with the familiarity of rejection. It was only his words that were different but I could still recognize it from a mile. I held onto the chair tightly with my left hand until it went numb so I could feel anything other than the stinging pain of failure and rejection. I could no longer lie to myself that I am valued to the exact degree as the androids were by simply claiming to be their owner. In the eyes of the powerful people I was only a person who polished their valuable trophies.
'' I could see how you thought there was a price tag on me by simply believing that the things I built are for sale but I can assure you that there are no materialistic things that could change my mind. I have bigger visions for my future than to let it be sealed by a director. I can not accept your generous gift because I am well aware that it is only a toll for you to use against me when the real offer and contract floats to the surface.
I have no price tag for my androids or on myself because the mere existence of my androids and my own intelligence will drown me in luxury I truly deserve. The next time we meet you will see how my work is planted like a vein in the history of inventions. ''
I said with a firm voice and awaited his answer. The movement of his hands drew my attention. The confident posture he had with clasped hands was now separated and laid flat on the table. My eyes wandered to the vein on his neck and the redness that came with it. His hand reached for his face and his jaw was locked with anger. He did not seem to handle rejection well by the look of his eyes flickering side to side deep in his own thoughts.
All I could see was a pig in a suit sweating drastically by the answer of no. I tilted my head slightly to the direction of my androids and stared at their void eyes. I took one last glance at them and saw a faint dark green light flickering in Bortums eyes alerting me that he was watching and well aware of the words exchanged between the director and I turned my attention back to the director and tried to control the laughter building inside me but failed miserably as the corner of my lips twisted.
Knowing that Bortums was present and ready to step made the fear wash away of believing my androids would be taken by force. I could practically feel the loyalty that my androids had for me and I was more than grateful for the great lengths my androids took to fulfill their end of promise.
'' Do you know how many people would kill to receive the same kindness that was presented to you. Seeing how you tossed away the biggest opportunity that came into your life leaves me no choice but to believe you are an adult or grateful to receive a chance like this. I have worked as a director for a very long time and I have never met a person who threw their future away quickly like yours.
I am very disappointed in you especially after hearing all the great and remarkable things about you from your principal, for you to end up throwing away this one lifetime opportunity. Mr. Owen told me that you have courses to attend after this. I will not be taking more time from you. You are free to leave.''
He said with a defeated voice and was fuming with disappointment. I can't deny that being seen as a disappointment brings up unwanted memories and the need of wanting to prove myself to people is a lie. This is not what I expected to be treated as because my mind was constantly overloaded with a threat coming towards me or that this meeting would end up as a lifelong threat awaiting me until I crumbled.
The last thing I would expect is the feeling of being a disappointment consuming my body. I was ready to unleash my androids on the director for taking the only light in my life. But here I was avoiding his judgmental and disappointed eyes staring at me as I tried to collect myself and headed for the door. Why couldn't he make this simple and be the villain I prepared myself for?.
