Jim Cooper shut the door to his car as he searched his keys for the one to his front door. Jackie was probably finishing dinner, meaning she ordered take-out for the millionth time. Days like this made him wish he hadn't quit smoking a few years ago. He spent the day going through several drug cases, another hit and run, and an identity theft case involving elderly patients in a nursing home.
He still had not found the time to deal with the whole Detective Taylor problem. The detective was trying to rattle him into making a mistake because if he had proof that he had changed the death certificate and falsified evidence, he would have made his move by now. Pierson was worried for nothing. So he made a mistake or two, but Taylor had nothing. Even if he did, Cooper would see that it got buried so deep it would never see daylight again.
"Jackie, I hope you ordered something remotely good 'cause I can't take any more health food," he said walking through the door. He hung up his coat and set down his briefcase near the couch in the living room. "Jackie, what did you order, huh?" he asked again. He walked to the bathroom in the bedroom but found no sign of his wife. It was strange because she usually was here when he got home. Maybe she was out with friends.
He walked back down the hall toward the kitchen. "Jackie, are you-" he stopped suddenly as he entered the kitchen. His wife was lying face down in what looked like a pool of blood. Cooper dropped the file he was carrying at the sight of her.
"You screwed up Cooper," came a voice from behind him. It was the last thing he ever heard.
