___________AVERY'S POINT OF VIEW________
Derek had told me what Carl Beuford had done to him. I grew up with this man. He was my mentor, surely he couldn't have malested Derek. I didn't believe him until Carl was taken to jail for it.
"My two star players!"Carl said. I could see Derek's muscles tense up and his hands form fists.
"We aren't your anythings, Carl."I said.
"Come on. I practically raised you two."Carl said. This infuriated Derek.
"Go to hell, you sick son of a—"Derek said, starting toward Carl.
"Derek. He's not worth it."I interrupted, grabbing his wrist. He stopped in his tracks. Derek looked back at me with hurt eyes. He stood sideways looking at me. He walked back to me and I wrapped my arms around his abdomen. Derek put his arms on my shoulders, but I could feel his eyes on Carl.
"Let's go."I said looking up at Derek.
"Yeah."He replied while letting me go, but still looking at Carl. We walked toward the exit. Derek's hand around my waist and mine on his shoulder.
"What about your drinks?"Carl called. I stopped walking and turned toward him.
"I think you can handle that, since you practically raised us."I said loud enough that he could hear me. I turned back to Derek, grabbed his hand, and walked out of the door. He gave me a quick smile.
We were driving through town toward a very familiar part.
"So where are we staying tonight?"I asked.
"I was hoping to stay at my mom's house. Is that ok?"Derek asked.
"Yeah. I haven't seen her in a while."I said.
"Great."He said. He had one hand on the steering wheel and one holding mine.
We pulled up to an apartment building. I remember playing football just a few blocks away, in our school's stadium. I remembered passing notes to Derek in class, asking him to meet me on the field for more practice. I remember watching a football game and freezing untill he gave me his letterman jacket. So many memories passed through my head while walking toward the building. Derek opened the door for me. We rode the elevator to his mother's floor. We walked to his mother's apartment. He was still holding my hand when he rang the door-bell. The door was answered by Derek's sister, Desiree.
"Derek!"she said hugging him. She let him go and moved to me,"Avery!" Desiree and I were friends in high school.
"Hey big sis. Is mom home?"Derek asked walking in. Desiree let me go.
"Yeah. She's in the kitchen."she answered.
"Oh man. Call the fire department."he said, getting the attention of his mom.
"Be quiet boy. That only happened once."Mrs. Fran called from the kitchen. Derek and I walked in to the kitchen.
"Well. If it isn't my baby boy."Mrs. Fran said while turning to my and Derek.
"Hi Mom."He said, hugging his mom.
"Hi baby. And hello Avery."She said, while releasing Derek and hugging me.
"Hi Mrs. Fran." I said. I winced.
"You ok Avery?"Derek said walking toward me.
"I'm...fine."I answered grabbing onto his arm. It was getting hard to breath. He brought me to the couch.
"What wrong?"Mrs. Fran asked. Derek explained the last few weeks to his mom.
"I just need to take a breather." I said putting a hand on my stomach. I closed my eyes and took three deep breaths.
"Do you need anything?" Desiree asked.
"No. I'm good."I answered.
"You sure?"Derek said grabbing my hand.
"I'm sure babe."I said.
"Ok."Mrs. Fran said,"Where are you guys staying tonight?"
"Actually. We were hoping to stay here."Derek answered.
"Of course."Mrs. Fran said. I looked at my watch, it was ten-thirty.
"Good because I'm beat."Derek said.
"Me too."I said.
Derek and I said good night and walked to the guest room.
"I'm gonna take a shower."I said."Are you sure your ok?" he repeated.
"Yeah." I said. I walked into the bathroom and locked the door. I turned on the shower and began to get undressed. I took off my shirt and look at my wounds. They reminded my of a song, so I started to sing:
"These battle scars don't look like they're fading. Don't look like they're ever going away. They ain't never going away. These battle scars." I finished undressing and stepped into the shower.
"Cause it will never be over. It will never be over. These battle scars don't look like they're fading. Don't look like they're ever going away. They ain't never going away. These battle scars."
I stepped out of the shower and dried off. I looked into the mirror at myself, questioning if it was worth it to survive. If I was worth the trouble. I saw something in the corner of my eye. My go-bag was near the door and there was a note on it. It read:
Keep singing. Your great at it.
P.S. I took your dirty clothes to wash.
—Derek
Oh yeah. It was worth it.
