the rain poured down onto the glade, a gloomy feeling throughout everyone. "they should be back by now." thomas said. "what happens if they don't make it?" thomas nervously tapped his fingers on the pole he leaned on.

"they're gonna make it." newt said, even though he too was nervous.

thomas walked up to newt, "happens if they don't?"

"they're gonna make it." he said again, convincing himself. as the rain finally stopped a silence fell over the glade. they waited at the entrance of the maze, hopeful to see their friends fine.

"come on, guys, can't we send someone after them?" thomas pleaded, worried about the three.

"that's against the rules," gally spoke," either they make it back or they don't. we can't risk losing anyone else." he stated sternly.

"there!" thomas pointed. minho and aviana were dragging alby. each looking extremely tired.

"wait, something's wrong." newt saw their struggle. everyone began cheering for them to push on, telling them they would make it. the doors began closing and they weren't close.

"minho, aviana, you gotta leave him!" gally advised, not stepping into the maze.

"they're not gonna make it." newt said. something in thomas made the entire world go slow. seeing minho struggling, and seeing alby was enough to make him hesitate to go forward. but with aviana there, he knew what he had to do.

"thomas, no!" newt shouted; reaching for thomas who rushed in the maze, but failed to grab at him. thomas slid through the wall that was closing on him. he landed on the floor with a thud, meeting minho's and aviana's tired stares.

"good job. just killed yourself." minho chuckled out of breath, before standing up.

"what?" thomas asked, standing up to get closer to the three. "what happened to him?" aviana glanced towards alby before back at thomas.

minho didn't seem impressed. "what does it look like? he got stung." minho stood up, dusting himself off. aviana lifted herself too looking up at the walls.

"what happened to his head?" aviana glanced at her leader before running her hands along the vines.

"aviana did what she had to do." minho stated, thomas nodded. he made his way to alby.

"okay. okay, help me get him up." aviana was immediately at his side trying to lift alby. her weak arms almost gave out.

"we gotta go. the maze is already changing." minho said, beginning to make his way into the maze.

"hey, minho! we can't just leave him here. we gotta get him up." minho grumbled, before helping with alby. they say him down against the wall.

"just sit him down. sit him down." minho advised; arms aching, legs cramping. "this isn't going to work. we gotta go. we gotta go!" he was getting desperate, he didn't want to get killed or worse stung, by a griever.

"what-what are you talking about? we gotta hide him." thomas protested, glancing towards aviana. she sighed, and placed a hand on her head and paced away from the two. "where?"

"we don't know." aviana mumbled, coming back towards the teens. thomas looked at them unbelievably.

"are you telling me there's not a single place we could take him?" he didn't believe them. if the maze was as big as everyone makes it seem, there must be somewhere they could go.

"listen to me, shuck-face, all right. take a look around. there's nowhere to go! you don't get it. we're already d*ad." minho watched as thomas—with the help of aviana—pull alby towards the wall. the two suspended their leader up in the air.
