Black Friday was just about the worst day to go engagement ring shopping. The mall was crowded. Like beyond crowded. You did not do well with crowds. Josh had been reminding you to do certain breathing exercises that were known to help you calm down.

"How about this one?" Jake asked you, pointing to a cushion cut diamond.

"Um," you muttered, trying to figure out how to reject it.

"Just because you don't like it doesn't mean Becca will."

"Jake, nobody would like that one. It's hideous, no offense," Josh added, looking up at the jeweler.

"Perhaps the pear cut?" the jeweler asked, more towards Josh than Jake.

"Mm, much better," Josh said.

He took your hand and led you over to a case that was filled with necklaces.

"Look at that one," Josh sighed.

It was beautiful but it seemed sort of simple for Josh's taste. It was a ring lined with opals and diamonds.

"It's beautiful. For you?" you asked.

"No, goofball. It's yours."

"Not for $500, it's not."

"It's on sale! 70% off!"

"I can't afford that type of jewelry."

"Oh, but you can afford a new air fryer?"

"Don't hate on the air fryer, Josh."

"Will you guys stop arguing and please come help me? She's going to wear this ring for the rest of her life. I want it to be perfect," Jake grumbled.

You and Josh walked back over to him. You looked over all of the different rings but none of them screamed Becca to you.

"I feel like she would want a round diamond," you said.

"I think we might be at the wrong place," Jake whispered to you.

"Okay. Let's try Ben Bridge then."

You and Jake left Josh behind to let the salesman down. Josh was always good at doing that. You and Jake would never just leave. You'd end up buying something on the cheaper end, like a pendant or a stainless steel band. Josh, on the other hand, had no problem letting people down lightly.

You were dragging ass because despite going home early, you hadn't actually fallen asleep until well after midnight. Jake wanted you guys up at the crack of dawn so you had only had time for half a cup of coffee. You were running low on sleep and caffeine and your patience was disintegrating with every step you took.

You and Jake made it to Ben Bridge and looked over the options there. You must have been looking for a solid twenty minutes before Josh finally reconvened with you.

"What took you so long?" you asked.

"I was getting you this," he said, holding up a to go cup from the Nordstrom Cafe.

You took it and happily sipped away. Jake turned around to you and Josh.

"I feel like you guys aren't taking this seriously," he whined.

"I hate to say it but I really don't think Kay Jewelers or wherever the fuck we are is where you're gonna find her wedding ring. We need to find some mom and pop shop with something one of a kind," Josh told Jake.

"I was beginning to think the same thing," Jake admitted.

Josh held his arm out and wrapped it around Jake's shoulder. You followed the two of them to the parking lot.
