Definition of Korean Words

There will be Korean words and phrases used all throughout the book. In any case that anyone is not familiar with, here are the words and its corresponding meaning for reference.


Adeul: Son. Used by parents to call their male child.

ah: is the Korean way of casually addressing people you are already acquainted with. It is appended after the name of the person you are talking to.

Ahjussi: is the Korean word for describing a man who could be considered middle aged.

Aigoo: is the Korean exclamation expression similar to 'Oh Dear!', 'Oh My!', or 'Geez!'

Ani / Aniyo: No

Andwae / Andwaeyo: No Way

Annyeong Haseyo: Hello. Used as a casual greeting.

Bogosipeo: I miss you

Daebak: Amazing. Used to express amusement.

Gabshida: Let's go

 Halmeoni: Grandma

Hyung: Older Brother. Used by younger boys to call older boys.

Jal Jayo: Sleep well

Jalgayo: Take Care

Jebal: Please. It is used when pleading or begging for something or making a strong request.

Jinjja: Really

Kamsahamnida: Thank you

Kiyeowo: Cute. Could be used for a person or a thing.

Mianhae / Mianhaeyo: Can be interpreted as 'I'm sorry' or simply 'Sorry'

Ne: Can be interpreted as 'Yes', 'Yeah', or 'Yep'.

Noona: Older Sister. Used by younger boys to call older girls.

Oppa: Older Brother. Used by younger girls to call older boys.

Pabo: Fool

Paboya: is used for saying that the person you are talking to is a fool.

Pali: Quickly. Might be closest to 'chop-chop' in the English language.

Saranghae: I love you

Seonsaeng-nim: Teacher. Used by students for calling their teachers.

Shiro: is the Korean word for not wanting something.

ssi: is the Korean way of formally addressing people you are not that familiar with. It is appended after the name of the person you are talking to.

Unnie: Older Sister. Used by younger girls to call older girls.

Wae: Why

Ya: Can be translated directly as 'Hey'. Commonly used when you are trying to get the other person's attention like saying 'Listen to me' or 'Look at this'.

Yeobo: Honey. Endearment term used by married couples.

Yeoboseyo: Hello. Used when answering a call on the phone.
