Megan was sulking when I had gone up, just as I had thought. But it would be cruel to let her starve, so I at least left her the rest of the snacks I had brought along.
Trent and Jake were fuming, but busied themselves with finishing off the dishes and cleaning up. Alice stayed in the bathroom with Isa for a bit until she had calmed down and finally came out.
"The upstairs bed okay?" she asked me in response to my request to sleep in the main house that night.
"Yeah, it's perfect. Thanks," I added.
Isa waved her hand. "No issue, I'm okay now too. If you left any ice cream left we could have some, but the dogs need fed."
I thought about what we could do, the rest of us, for the rest of the evening. "Put on whatever on Netflix, I can get the dogs," I suggested.
She raised an eyebrow and grinned mischievously. "Even the 'animated crap' you love to hate?"
And I sighed, then gave in, because I was tired of fighting and drama and people being upset. I would have agreed to anything as long as there would be peace.
"Also, I can call your mom and take Megan down to the ferry tomorrow," I said.
Isa brightened up. "You're too good, I hope you know that. If my sis does come to her senses again she better remember she's meant to be with you."
................
Okay, the series I was made to watch weren't actually that bad. Funny for sure and a little cringe worthy, but adorable all the same.
More ice cream was eaten and at one point I had to make another trip up to the freezer for a second tub.
But I didn't care, everything was finally peaceful once again.
Soon enough, it was late and everyone was tired.
T and J hugged us girls goodnight before heading up the path to the workshop.
"Do you need anything? Like, toothbrush wise," Alice said to me while Isa went out to shut the chickens in.
"I think I'm alright, but thanks anyway," I answered.
"I should be the one thanking you, after helping."
She came with me into the bathroom with her own toothbrush.
"Sorry things didn't work out with you and Megan," Alice added, squirting toothpaste onto the bristles of her own as I waited to do the same with mine.
"It's cool, at least I know she likes me anyway," I said with a grin.
Yeah, I was choosing to focus on the positive.
That night I slept easy, and was the first one awake. Let the dogs out to do their business and settled down in the porch with my novel and a packet of biscuits nicked from the cupboard.
Isa came out to say hi and good morning, before donning trainers and heading over to let the hens out.
"Hey," Alice said when I went back in for some breakfast. "You okay?"
"Should be after some cereal, you want anything?" I asked, reaching up and taking down the box with the cereal boxes in it.
She said thanks but no and took the last of my biscuits.
...............
"That dog needs a cut today," Trent said when he and Jake had come down from the workshop and were settling into some pancakes prepared by Isa and Alice.
"Got an appointment booked? Tell me the address and I'll take him," I offered.
"Uh uh, you are being far too nice. What is up with that?" Jake butted in.
And I swear, everyone turned to look at me as I looked down at my shoes which had suddenly became very interesting.
"If it's about last night, you know it wasn't your fault," Alice pointed out.
"Our family is crazy, I'll admit that, but you're part of it and haven't done anything wrong," Isa added.
I honestly had no idea why I was doing so much to help, especially since it wasn't me doing bad things like Meg.
"I don't know," I said at last. "You guys have been so awesome and I just want to make it up to you,"
"Cheesiest. Line. Ever," Jake commented, and I punched him in the arm.
T snickered at that and when J said "Ow".
For the rest of the morning I just stayed inside, waiting for Meg to come so I could drive her to Dunoon for the ferry.
Isa was rewatching the Trolls series for whatever reason with Alice, and I was fighting the urge to go sit at the kitchen table and watch from a distance.
FYI, I was in the porch and the door was open since the dogs can come in and out as they please.
Only Louis had bothered to stay, letting me rub his back with my feet.
Trent called me over, and I knew instantly Megan was finally up.
"Get in," I said to her while getting lovely Louis into the back of my car.
"Don't forget about that dog," T called out before I got myself into the vehicle.
At the bottom of the hill, while Meg got the gate open and closed it when I had driven out, I knew it was time to get her talking.
The very least I could get was an apology.
"You have fucked up majorly with two girls in your life and destroyed just about all of your relationships with Alice and Jake," I declared when she was back inside and we were officially leaving Dunbeag.
She didn't say anything for a bit, and neither did I.
I wasn't exactly mad at her, that's why I didn't say our friendship or whatever you want to call it was done too.
Because I still loved her, as stupid as that was to love someone who could destroy things so easily with a temper and all the wrong words.
"I'm sorry, for that night and being mean to you and just everything else," Megan had said eventually.
I had the apology I wanted.
"It's okay, I'm sorry too for never telling you how I feel," I answered, and we held hands.
..........
Goodbyes are always the worst, I knew that would be true for the rest of my life after The Fox And The Hound.
I didn't want her to go all of a sudden, but Isa needs a break until Meg can find a way to apologise properly to her in a big way.
"We'll be home in a few days, try not to miss me too much," I promised before we hugged.
I had never waved goodbye so much in my life.
..........
Before taking Louis to his appointment, I called Alice.
"She's on her way back, just saw her off," I said.
"Thanks, what about Louis?" she asked.
"Just taking him now, I'll text before coming home."
"Okay, but please text Trent? I'm sorry, Isa wants me to go on a walk with her and Brooke."
"Seriously, it's fine. Go have fun."
"You're too sweet, thanks for everything."
