Beta Lumity (college AU) meet cute

"I met a girl once. She sorta ripped me open... she doesn't even know my name... where'd you go? Were you all in a dream?"

-Amelie, Gracie Abrams

Luz took another sip of her drink from the thermos that she brought along. The airconditioning was just about to start cooling the theatre hall down causing her mouth to dry. She took a big gulp, letting the warm water soothe her throat. The paint from her bottle was already slightly peeling off from the metal body with words from those around her to get a new one but Luz still kept on using it regardless. Sure she could just get another but to Luz, sentimental value meant more than numerical value could ever be worth up to. Willow got it for her past birthday. She had an inkling she would get a new one for her next anyways and even if she did buy a new and more attractive design before Willow had gotten to it, she knew she would fall back to using the old paint peeling bottle.

She capped her bottle and nodded along mindlessly as Skara was droning on and on about her new crush on a fellow actor in their theatre club. Luz faked a smile as Skara started squealing about the traits that she adored about him. She was genuinely happy for her friend of course, but surely everyone has their limits- especially if she had heard the same squeal non-stop for the past hour, Skara still going on repeating the same words over and over. Luz wondered if she would be acting the same once she found someone to crush on. She never really paid attention to the people around her much. Maybe she should, perhaps then she can finally have a partner to do things with.

Luz let out a dreamy sigh. A sigh that leads to a cough. And another. And another.

Before long, Luz was wheezing. She tried to take a desperate breath, a squeaky wheeze trailed after. She felt another cough trying to spill out but tried to hold it in. She had to breathe first which she soon failed as the wheezes began to alternate with more coughs.

She barely noticed as Skara led her to sit by the stage. Eyes watering, mind foggy and lungs drowning, Luz frantically patted her pockets trying to find her inhaler. Her hands were shaking too much, she jumped albeit as she felt Skara's cold touch replacing hers as she fished out Luz's inhaler. The struggling girl closed her eyes to stop the tears from spilling and she gasped in a puff. Another. Another. And another. And- a sigh. Relief.

Luz let out a stream of little gasping coughs, trying to clear out her airway. She could still feel the fluids in her lungs. She knew Skara could tell that she was going to have another episode soon because her wheezy breaths aren't exactly quiet. She tried to shrug it off. She didn't mean to ruin her friend's mood- especially when she was on such a high about her crush.

Skara asked gently.  "Is the room too cold for you? I could turn down the AC if you need me to?"

Luz grimaced guiltily. Trying to school her expression so as to not show it on her face. "Nah it's fine. I think it was just a matter of time." She jerked her head slightly to the left to subtly point at the group of vapers. Luz loved her team. Surely she did and she didn't mind them smoking. She had told them as much during their first club meeting. She just wished they wouldn't do so around her all the time. Her asthmatic lungs could only take so much.

Skara shot her an apologetic look. Luz gave her a reassuring smile. Trying to change the subject, Luz asked, "So what exactly did he say to you after he offered to walk you to your car?" Even if Luz had already heard what happened way too many times, she was just glad she could get her friend smiling again. Luz found herself smiling along. Which then proved to be difficult to maintain as she kept feeling an itch of a cough bubbling up.
