Nandini sighed as she shoved the list back into her pocket and headed off down to red convent street in the direction of her next drop point.
"WATCHOUT FOR CCTV", Sarah messaged her.
There were fifteen clients on her list today and the hours stretched from 11:40am all of the way to 6pm. That was a large window and she knew that she could make all of the locations well within the time frame. The trouble was counting on the clients to not run late on her and behave in a fashion that didn't alert attention.
The gas station drop proved more simpler than expected because the man that she was passing goods to was smarter than the usual client.
She had slowed down when she had started drawing close to the station, languidly rolling down the length of the street and the silver car had pulled out of the lot and overtook her. So Nandini had discreetly followed him down to an empty street and the man had unrolled a window and left his arm on clear view out of it.
Nandini had collected her own envelope out of her backpack and when that person drove past, they quickly exchanged envelopes and she carried on down to the end of the street without needing to stop. Really smart, she had to hand it to the man, he made her job a hell of a lot easier.
Her seventh drop took her to the Northface road but she was a whole half an hour ahead of the time schedule and she couldn't just wait around for the client to show. She knew that man from a few drops and she knew that he was always late and caused her grief, so she decided that she could take a little break.
It was 3:15pm and Nandini just knew that a certain officer would still be patrolling the area around this park.
So Nandini sailed down the streets, backpack considerably lighter than it had been when she had collected it, and within ten minutes of constant biking, she caught sight of the sprawling park drawing close: the unmistakable sight of the banks of trees.
Not too far from the entrance of the park there was a small kiosk that sold coffee and small snacks, cigarettes and newspapers, and she could see the police officer sitting at the end stool like usual.
This was probably the third time she had visited the kiosk for she had bumped into him at earlier hours in the past. The last few times Nandini had seen him, the young officer had been walking the area rather than sitting still but right now he was also taking a break.
"Officer Singh, keeping the streets safe one coffee at a time", Nandini called out and the man shifted on the stool to look at her.
That man smiled, "Oh look who it is," Singh said as he folded his arms on the counter of the kiosk. "It's the tardiest hooligan in the whole of Mooncity. Ditching once again, I see."
Nandini shrugged, "Ditch? That's a good one man, a real good one." she got down from her bicycle and applied stand. She walked near with her hands shoved into her jeans pockets. "To ditch you've gotta be going to school in the first place, right?"
"Yeah kid, I guess you do." The officer picked his Styrofoam container up and took a small sip, still twisted on the stool to look at her.
Nandini felt the strongest urge to scuff her sneaker on the curb and she managed to suppress it. To say that she and Officer Singh were friends wasn't exactly the truth. The word carried heavier connotations than what described their situation. Perhaps it was better to say that they were mutually acquainted.
Nandini had no doubts about the fact that the officer knew that she was doing something illegal because she couldn't possibly have gotten away with her behaviour if he didn't. Tardiness was enough to see her get dragged to a high school - not that she actually had one that she went to of course, but that wasn't the point - and it certainly resulted in a bag search for sure.
