(Season 1, Episode 5)
"Hey, I'll take over for a second." Jacqui says to Emily, sitting down next to her.
Jacqui gently takes the rag, dunking it under the water once to make it cold again, then wipes at Jim's forehead again. Emily remains by Jim's side, a small smile on her face. He's suffering.
Every bump, every little stone they hit, he could feel it all. She could tell that everything hurt, the pain was noticeable on his face, even though he tried to conceal it. He was getting incredibly warm, and he looked like he was nearing the end.
They'd never make it there with Jim, he was living his last moments, and there was nothing they could do to stop it. The only thing they could do to help him, was to make him feel as comfortable as he could, he wasn't though.
After a moment, Emily stands up, putting a hand on Jacqui's shoulder and giving her a sad smile, then gently placing a hand on Jim's knee before she leaves the small bedroom. The man looked fragile, like porcelain. It hurt her to see him that way.
She walks up to the front of the RV to where Dale and Glenn are seated, not sparing a look at Andrea. Emily couldn't even look at Andrea even if she wanted to, because every time she did, she'd see Amy, she'd see her failure to protect the woman.
Emily leans on Glenn's seat, elbow resting on the headrest. She looks out at the roads ahead, the flicker of hope she had for Jim long gone.
"He's not looking too good." Emily says, now leaning her head on her arms.
Glenn slightly leans away from the chair to look up at Emily. "Is he going to make it?" Glenn asks, but it's noticeable that he doesn't sound so hopeful about it either.
"I don't know, Glenn. Honestly, I don't think so." She replies, sighing a little.
For miles they drive towards the CDC, Emily and Glenn sometimes switched seats with Dale to make the drive a little more comfortable. When Emily's not driving, she keeps herself busy by either taking care of Jim or by reading a book that Dale had in his RV.
Rick is driving one car with Lori, Sophia, Carl and Carol. Shane is driving his own car. T-Dog is with Andrea, and Daryl is driving a car with his motorcycle in the back on the truckbed.
Emily can't even focus on the book for more than a couple of minutes, not when Jim is practically taking his last breath in the back of the RV. At one point when she's driving, a cloud of smoke comes from the front of the RV, the engine sputtering a little.
"Uh, Dale?" She calls out, already honking the horn once before slowly coming to a stop.
"Damn it." He mumbles, already heading out when they've come to a complete stop.
"I told you we'd never get far on that hose. I said I needed the one from the cube van." Dale says, Emily rest her hands on top of her head, looking at the smoke still emitting from the RV.
