The woods were beautiful at this time of year. No campers to disturb the peace of nature, 75% of birds migrate so you're left with an eerie silence- the perfect atmosphere. It was quiet, Jack liked the quiet.
"Hey, Jack. J-jack?"
Jack was brought back from his thoughts and turned to the brunette boy walking slightly behind him.
"What do you want?"
He said in a monotone voice. Clearly not wanting to be bothered."D-did you hear? The R-rake ventured too close to the edge of the forest and slaughtered 2 people!"
"Look, Toby. I don't care. As long as it stays away from our territory we shouldn't bother. That thing isn't brainless, it knows how to survive."
"Yeah I know. It's j-just that he was seen. By a human."
Jack stood in his tracks.
"What?" a pause followed "How do you know?"
"I s-saw."
"Elaborate."
"Well as I was making my way back I saw it near the tree line l-looking at a woman. She stood still."
Jack didn't say a word. He stared at the boy. Being devoid of eyes never stopped him from making people feel like he was staring into their souls. Toby was on edge now. Jack always unnerved him.
"D-do you think she'll report it?"
Said the boy. Jack noted that today he wasn't so perky. That was rather odd."We won't give her a chance."
"What do you mean?"
Toby stammered."Tell me, what else did you see? Where did she go?"
Toby took a while to respond and that annoyed Jack. He was usually like this- timid. Very odd considering the fact he liked to butcher people, Jack thought.
"W-well... she w-went home. I followed her as best as I could, but I noticed that she w-wasn't alone..."
"What do you mean by 'she wasn't alone'?"
"Well... it followed her home."
