Heavens had blessed her.
That had to be it. Gods from above pitied how she was stuck with a husband with gambling addiction who refused to do anything to improve their lives, and they decided to bless her with a child.
That was all that she could think of as she stared at the newborn baby in her arms. The baby had long ago settled in her arms and was now sleeping soundly. The baby nuzzled closer to her, letting out a soft snore.
She felt like she could choke on her own tears of joy.
Her precious son.
"Do you want to keep him, or do you want to send him back?" Her mother asked as she cleaned the birthing blood and the sweat from the floor. She didn't have a midwife, thanks to her husband who gambled her money away. "I suggest that you'd send him back, dear. You don't have enough money to afford him."
"Keep." She answered, with zero hesitation. She would never send her baby back when he had been given to her in the first place. "I want to keep him."
Her mother nodded, not pushing it any further. She knew that she couldn't change her daughter's mind, she also didn't question why her husband wasn't present. "And what are you going to name him?"
"Yoshihiko." Joy and prince.
"A beautiful name." Her mother answered distantly.
All she could do was nod. Her baby. He was just so precious. She had no idea how her scumbag husband could ever help her create such a precious being.
She'd protect her precious baby.

Yoshihiko giggled softly. "Mmma!"
"That's it, Yoshihiko! You're doing it!" She cheered. "Say it again! Say 'Mama'!"
"Mmaaa..." Another giggle. "Mmmama! Mama!"
She brought the little bundle of joy up into the air, nearly crying. "You did it, my little prince! You said mama!"
Yoshihiko giggled loudly, repeating the word 'mama' over and over again. And all she could do was cry tears of joy. Her precious prince had said his first word, and it was 'mama'.
------.-------.-----.-----
She adjusted her hold on her biwa just as Yoshihiko peeked into the room.
"Yoshihiko?"
"Mama, what is that?" Yoshihiko asked.
She chuckled. "It's my biwa. I play music with it."
Yoshihiko's eyes shined as he walked closer to his mother. "Can you play something?"
She nodded with a soft smile, raising her bachi and starting to play.
------.-------.--------.-----
It slowly became the norm. Everyday she'd play something to Yoshihiko before bedtime. He enjoyed hearing her play. He always told her how much he loved hearing her play.
And she always enjoyed watching Yoshihiko's eyes shine so brightly and a smile graze his lips everytime she played.
Even when her usual audience and her husband never really appreciated her skills, that didn't matter to her anymore. Her son loved it, and that was enough to motivate her to keep going. Maybe their lives were going to improve after all. And just maybe she could give Yoshihiko the life he deserved.
-----.-------.------.-----
Yoshihiko coughed.
"Most likely due to the poor diet that he has been recieving. Food poisoning is sadly common around here." The doctor said.
