After the footsteps faded away, Sarah and Naomi shared a look of relief, and then they got back to work. They looked around the basement for something they could use to break the window, but there was nothing in sight.
They were getting desperate, when suddenly, Sarah noticed something.Sarah spotted a rusty nail sticking out of the wall, about three feet above the ground. It was the only thing in the room that looked remotely useful.
Sarah and Naomi looked at each other, and then they both looked up at the nail. It was just out of reach. They would have to jump to reach it. Sarah turned to Naomi and said, "I'll go first. If I can reach it, I'll hand it to you."
"Okay," Naomi said with a nod. She stepped back, giving Sarah some room to jump. Sarah took a deep breath, braced herself, and then leaped into the air. She reached up as high as she could, and just barely managed to grab the nail.
She gave it a tug, and it came loose from the wall. She then handed it down to Naomi, who took it with shaking hands. Now they had a tool they could use to break the window. They looked at each other, their eyes filled with determination.
With the rusty nail in hand, they approached the window. It was made of thick, sturdy glass, and it would be difficult to break. But they had to try. They took turns tapping at the window with the nail, using all their strength.
After several minutes of effort, they finally managed to make a small crack in the glass. They kept at it, and the crack grew larger and larger. And then, with a loud crash, the window shattered.
The sound of the window breaking echoed through the basement, and Sarah and Naomi froze in terror. They held their breath, waiting for someone to come running. But no one came.
They looked at each other, and then back at the window. It was their chance to escape. Without hesitation, they both climbed through the broken window, and found themselves outside in the upcoming moonlight.
Because they had to wait for a long and quiet time before they could escape made them feel so relieved when they finally jumped down so now they were finally free!
As they stood outside, Sarah and Mrs. Naomi could hear sirens in the distance. They looked at each other, panic-stricken. "We have to get out of here," Mrs. Naomi said. "But how?" Sarah asked.
They both knew that if they were caught, they'd be in serious trouble. "We have to go into the woods," Mrs. Naomi said. "No one will look for us there." Without another word, they ran into the woods, not knowing what the future held for them.
As they ran, Mrs. Naomi could feel her heart pounding in her chest. She glanced at Sarah, who was breathing heavily and stumbling over roots and rocks. Mrs. Naomi slowed down so that they could stay together.
"We have to keep going," Mrs. Naomi said, "but we have to be careful." They kept running, ducking under branches and jumping over fallen trees. They could hear the sirens getting closer, but they didn't dare stop.
Now, the sirens are getting closer and closer, and they are starting to feel exhausted, but they know they can't stop. They have to keep going.
Just as they were starting to lose hope, they spotted a small cabin in the distance. It looked abandoned, but they had no other choice. They ran towards it, feeling a sense of relief.
As they approached, they noticed that the door was slightly ajar. They hesitated for a moment, but then pushed the door open and stepped inside.
