When Audrey was just five or six years old, she noticed that her mother's belly was growing round. When she asked her mother what was happening, her mother explained that she was pregnant with new babies.
Audrey's heart leaped at the thought of having a new siblings, someone to play with and confide in. But as the months passed, she began to wonder if this new siblings would mean less love and attention for her and her brother.
Audrey was thrilled at the prospect of a new sibling. In her mind, she was already a mini-mom, taking care of everyone and everything.
She vowed to herself that she would be the best big sister in the world, even with four younger siblings to look after.
A few months later, Audrey was awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of her parents arguing. She crept out of her bedroom and crept closer to where they were shouting at each other.
The argument grew more heated, until suddenly there was a loud crash and a cry of pain. She ran to find her mother on the floor, bleeding. Her father was standing over her, his face twisted in anger.
He ran out of the house, leaving her mother alone and injured. It was then that Audrey realized that not all families were as perfect as she had thought.
After two months in the hospital, Audrey's mother finally came home. But when she arrived, she didn't have a baby with her.
Audrey's heart sank as she realized that the baby must not have survived. She wondered where the baby was, but her mother refused to talk about it.
And when her father arrived home later that day, he was just as angry as ever. The atmosphere in the house was tense and uncomfortable, and Audrey felt like she was living in a nightmare.
Audrey felt sick to her stomach. She realized that something terrible must have happened. She decided to let her mother rest and went to her room to cry.
Later, when she had composed herself, she went to talk to her mother. 'What happened to the babies?' she asked. 'I'm so sorry,' her mother said. 'They were born too early, and they didn't survive.'
Audrey's heart broke, and she felt like the world had ended. But the tragedy was just beginning.
Her father came home and began shouting at her mother, blaming her for the loss of the babies. 'You killed our children!' he yelled. 'You are a terrible wife and mother!'
Her mother began to cry, and Audrey was filled with rage. She couldn't believe that her father could be so cruel. But the fighting continued, day after day, and the atmosphere in the house became more and more tense.
Audrey didn't know what to do. All she could think about was how to protect her mother from her father's anger.
Audrey's father became more and more aggressive, often shouting and even hitting his wife. But through it all, her mother never fought back or tried to leave him.
Audrey didn't understand why her mother was so passive in the face of such abuse. But she knew that something had to be done.
She felt like a prisoner in her own home, and she feared for her mother's safety. Then one day, she made a decision that would change everything.
Audrey's father was blind to the suffering of his wife, even after the loss of their twins. He seemed to have no capacity for love or compassion.
And when he brought home divorce papers, his wife signed them without hesitation. She knew that it was the only way to escape his abuse and start a new life for herself and her daughter.
But little did she know that the journey ahead would be even more difficult than the one she had just left behind.
Audrey was relieved to be out of an abusive marriage, but she was devastated to be separated from her family.
The court had to decide who would have custody of Alex and Audrey, and it was a long and difficult process.
As the court proceedings came to an end, Audrey's mother was granted custody of Audrey. Alex, however, was sent to live with their father.
As a condition of the ruling, Audrey's father was required to keep Alex in contact with his mother and to report any problems to her or the authorities.
The thought of being separated from her twin brother was almost too much to bear, and Audrey felt like her entire world had come crashing down around her.
Audrey's father's selfish and cruel behavior had caused the family to fall apart. He had divorced his wife, and had even hit and abused her.
Now that their younger siblings were gone, it seemed like he didn't care about anything or anyone.
Audrey's mother was left alone to pick up the pieces of her broken family, and she felt like she was fighting a losing battle.
