Falah's point of view.
I run inside the hospital to the elevator, pressing the button to get me to the third floor. I impatiently stand when I turn to see someone sitting on the floor with her hand on her head. I furrow my brows, noticing her. I walk to her, squatting. "Alya?" She raises her head, seeing Alya's face with her eyes widened, only shock and no sign of tears which is unlike her. Her hand and body shaking rigorously.
" I-I-I d-dont...". She stammers. "I-I-I d-don't k-n....". She trails of muttering not being able to hug me back. She's going through shock.
I hug her when she falls silent. I pant, wondering what exactly happened? What's the condition? What's going on? Will he make it?
"I-I caused it." She whimpers before I pull away to look at her. "Don't, he's going to be fine." She covers her face with her hands, rocking from forward backward. "It's my fault. I told him to go horse riding." She wails, her body still trembling. "It would've happened anyways."
"What do you mean?"
"God willed it that way." She shakes her head, crying. "Let's go. Let's go wait at the reception upstairs. There might be good news." She stands up without my help and rushes to the elevator. She starts chewing on her inner lip after we stepped into the elevator. She taps her feet rigorously and rushes out of the elevator immediately it dings.
I notice a group of people by the seats. "Alya." Jaffar walks to her. "Where were you? I've been looking all over for you." He hugs her as she sobs. "Where is she?!" A woman shouts from behind, gaining the attention of everyone there. She storms with her nose flaring up in anger. "Lateefa, don't cause drama here." Jaffar warns sternly while walking towards her.
"No, how could she do that? She knows he's old!" She tries to get closer but Jaffar stops her. She's her sister? She's not the one we met at the mall that day. "Stop this! Please!" She cries as wrap my arm around and she buries her head in my abdomen. "He'll be fine." I ignore the Lateefa and walk alya to the chairs to sit. "What was your motive? To kill him? Well, luckily enough for you, you're almost there!"
She continues shouting. "Ignore her, she's spewing nonsense." She sits as i squat in front of her. "She's telling the truth. I let him ride the horse." I use my hands to try to stop the tears but it keeps streaming down her face. "God willed it that way, unless you say otherwise, I don't know why you're crying. He always rode horses and I doubt even if you warned him, he'd have listened."
I cup her cheeks, hearing Lateefa screaming. "Ignore her, you were there for him and you're here for him. Do you think he'll blame you? He'd never and have you seen anyone besides her blame you?" She shakes her head. "Exactly, now stay here. I'll be back." I kiss her on the forehead before walking to Jaffar as he explains something to Lateefa.
She raises her head to look at me. "Falah, this is our sister, Lateefa. Lateefa, this is Alya's husband, Falah." She nods, panting. "How can she let him do that?" She starts complaining again, putting me off more. "What happened? What's the situation?"
"He got dragged by the horse and he's in the ER. The doctors told me that he has multiple internal bleeding, and a broken rib." I use my hand to cover my mouth after adding this injuries with his disease. I don't think he's going to make it. Why does it have to be revealed like this? As long as he comes out okay. He will Insha Allah.
"She's gotten more stupid. If I had known, I would've stayed with him." Lateefa hisses then locks eyes with me. "She stayed and took care of him. She wouldn't have let him ride the horse if she knew it would hurt him." She scoffs, placing a hand on her waist. "This is a family matter."
"Lateefa, stop." Jaffar warns but she ignores him. "No. He's just an in law that forced himself on Alya. What does he know?"
"What is wrong with you?! Are you that self centered?!" Jaffar shouts startling her. "Why can't you keep quiet? I'm sure baba doesn't know or think we'll be here. All he'll be thinking about is Alya and him because they were the only ones there for him. WE left him so don't come playing savior." Jaffar straightens her out, his reaction taking her aback.
She keeps quiet, looking at him. "I don't want to hear your voice again." He warns then storms off. She avoids eye contact as I turn and leave her standing. I walk towards Alya when I see haleem. I walk to him, desperate for good news. "Haleem?" I stand ready for anything as he takes off his cap. "We're done with the surgery and he's stable. The rest is in the hands of Allah. You know he has cancer so coupled with this, I'll have to say the chances are low but if he wakes up-".
"When he wakes up...."
"...he wakes up, it might not be long for him." He sighs, taking off his face mask. "How much time does he have ?" I hear Alya from behind me making me sigh. "I can't say but every second counts. I'm sorry." She nods calmly, covering her mouth with her hand. "Thank you." She says to Haleem and he nods, walking away. "He doesn't have long, in a few, we'll be able to see him."
She takes a sharp breath when I feel like my airways has been blocked. I calmly try to breath air back in my lungs but it seems impossible. I sit on the chair, trying to catch my breath. "Falah?" I raise my head, acting normally. "Mhmm?" Alya sits beside me and I hold her hand. "He'll wake up. I know he will." She squeezes my hand, her eyes fixated on something.
I hang my head, trying to breathe. "Falah? Are you okay?" She asks and I nod, starting to feel a bit of air in my lungs. "I'm fine." I look at her face full of worry, confusion, denial and shock. I wish I could take it all away, make her smile again. "Alya." I hear iya mi call as we raise our heads to see her. Alya stands up and hugs iya mí immediately.
"I'm here, don't cry." She hugs her, caressing her back. "Iya mi." I stand up, gaining a glance from her. "How's he doing? Is he stable?" Alya pulls away, wiping her tears. "Yes, he is. We're hoping he regains consciousness." I explain. "Which is soon." Alya adds making her nod. "Insha Allah, let's take a bit of a walk, shall we? Catch our breaths." She places her hands on Alya's shoulder.
Thankfully, she's here. She knows how to calm her more than I do. I sit down, regaining the full ability to breathe. Why did it just decide to start now? Now's not the time.
