"We're home!" Zero called aloud, both entering the home, the entity chucking the broken bat at the foot of the stairs.
There was no response. Strange. That was until they took a single step into the living room.
"Watch your step!"
The floor had been covered in small samples of fabric, tossed in the most awkward places. Sebastian sat at the dining room table, tapping his hands, deep in thought.
"I really can't decide what pattern to use to fix your dress, Hikari," He groaned.
"I told you not to..." Hikari stated, glumly.
"Zero, can you make dinner?"
"Ugh...fine..."
Zero made his way over the fabric into the kitchen, whereas Hikari made her way over to Sebastian. She rested her head on her father's shoulder, pouting glumly.
"Ba?"
Sebastian hummed in response, continuing his work.
"Can cats talk?"
Zero groaned," Not this again."
Sebastian glanced at her, clearly not computing what she'd asked," Well, let's see..."
There was a long, strained pause.
"What-!?"The three of them sat at the dining table, eating.
"Actually," Sebastian smiled, blowing on a piece of steak," You reminded me of something."
Zero raised an eyebrow.
"When Hikari was much younger..."
Hikari audibly groaned, clearly embarrassed enough already.
"She used to tell everyone that she could talk to cats," Sebastian smirked, a bit catishly himself.
"She did?" Zero chuckled.
"I did-!?" Hikari furrowed her eyebrows, confused.
"Yes! Don't you remember?"
Hikari frowned, trying to think. It was sunset, and five year old Hikari was walking home. Her hair was tied back into a ponytail, and her fringe covered her eyebrows. In an arm, she held a box of goldfish snacks, happily munching on them as she walked. She hadn't even noticed the dirty, white kitten following behind her, starving. That was until she noticed the noise of little padded feet. She turned around, jumping to a stop, the kitten stopping with her.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
The kitten looked up at her, letting out a mew. It's sad blue eyes staring up at the girl.
"Oh, you're hungry."
Hikari grinned, sitting down on the pavement beside it.
"Do you like fish?"
The kitten mewed in response. Hikari giggled, taking a couple of the goldfish crackers from the box and setting them on the pavement.
"Here, have some of these!"
The kitten ate happily, quite quickly too, munching down on them.
"You need a bath," Hikari hummed, rubbing her hand over the kitten's back as it ate.
"Taste good?"
The kitten glanced up at her, happily mewing in response. Hikari nodded.
"Ah, I see! Want some more?"
The kitten mewed.
"Here!" Hikari set the entire box in front of the kitten," Eat them all!"
She watched, giggling, as the small kitten stuffed its head into the box, eating. It looked up at her, even happier, mewing again.
Hikari beamed," You don't have to thank me!"
"Hikari?"
Hikari immediately leapt up, noticing Sebastian behind her.
"Baba!"
She ran over to him, grabbing his arm, giggling.
"What were you doing?"
"Talking to a cat!"Sebastian smiled, Zero snorting as he took a sip of his drink.
"And then, I asked her what the cat said. Her answer was too adorable."
"Oh, that's new!"
Hikari scowled at Zero.
"She told me the kitten said, ' It's tough to survive in this world'."
Hikari sighed, cutting up some of her food.
"She was so serious, I couldn't help laughing!"
