˖⁺。˚⋆˙✧⋆。°⋆࿓Your sister's 15th birthday is coming up soon which means the Quinceanera, the traditional coming-of-age celebration for Latinas, and you wanted to have Tom with you.
However there was a slight problem... he didn't know Bachata so it meant you had to teach him.
He was up for the challenge. So here you were in the living room with Tom, trying your best.
"Okay baby feel the beat" you said to Tom
While holding his hands, telling him the beats."1, 2, 3, 4, left 5, 6, 7, 8 right" his feet were trying to catch up, but he had trouble.
"Ah I can't do this baby." He said, shrugging his shoulders and looking all defeated.
"Okay baby try to look at my feet while I explain okay?
Begin with both your feet together.
Count the beat of the music: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4. When you're ready baby, start by stepping to the left with your left foot on beat 1. Then, bring your right foot to your left foot on beat 2. Step left with your left foot again on beat 3, then finally, raise your right foot off the ground slightly on beat 4."You tried to explain it. You knew he was confused, but he stood up and asked you to repeat it with him so you did.
"Okay baby you may have noticed that by raising your right foot off the ground slightly, you are kind of forced to jut your hips out to the right. This is perfect - eventually, the effect you want to create is a rolling motion in your hips."
You said moving to the next steps, he was still very focused, his brows slightly furrowed.
He was actually doing pretty well, I mean for his first time."Don't stop baby! Plant your right foot on the ground on the next beat 1, stepping to the right. Then, just mirror the motions you've already made in the opposite direction: bring your left foot to your right on beat 2, step right on beat 3, and raise your left foot slightly on 4. Your hips should jolt to the left now."
You said clapping the beats, he was finally doing all the steps you had learned him correctly now."Am I doing it baby?!" He said excited, still looking at his feet trying to not get too distracted.
"YESS baby!" Okay let's continue!" You said not wanting him to lose the beat.
"In Bachata, there are two basic positions for holding your partner - open position and closed position." You said watching him nod his head.
"Open position puts more space between us, as we make contact only through our hands. For open position, keep your arms loose and relaxed. Offer me both palms, facing up. I'll gently place my hands in yours - allow them to rest there.
Don't grab with your thumbs.
Both mine and your elbows should be bent at your sides, which will put our bodies about a foot or two apart."
You said as you did the open position with him.-
"For closed position, wrap your arm around my body so that your palm is resting roughly in the middle of my back." You could feel his hand making his way there.
"I will drape my arm over yours, resting my hand near your shoulder.
Using your unoccupied arm which is called your "leading arm"." You said looking into his eyes as he stared back."hold my other hand out to the side at about shoulder or chest height, keeping both of your elbows bent.
Don't interlock fingers - our hands should be held palm-on-palm, with the back of your hand facing out. As you dance, use your outstretched hand to lead me, gently guiding my upper body in the direction you're moving.""Closed position allows more space and flexibility when it comes to advanced moves like turns. Closed position, on the other hand, is somewhat more intimate, as it involves an arm draped across my back baby and slight-to-strong contact between our bodies."
You explained as he was watching you with a very focused expression."Traditionally, in bachata, the man leads, so, I'm following your directions, whether that means stepping to the right or to the left first."
You said as he suddenly spun you around and kissed you."Tom, don't lose focus" you said, laughing getting into position again.
"Sorry I can't help it." He said
"Regardless of whether you're in open or closed position, both of us perform basically the same "left four beats, right four beats". However, realize that, since both of us are facing each other, one of us will be stepping in the opposite direction."
You told him as he looked at you, confusion written on his face. You explained it again while showing him,as he understood it this time."For now, try moving through the basic left-and-right bachata steps twice, then doing a back-and-forth motion twice, then switching back to the left-and-right motion and repeating."
You said as you were explaining Incorporate back-and-forth motion."To the left 1, 2, 3, (4) To the right 1, 2, 3, (4),
To the left 1, 2, 3, (4) To the right 1, 2, 3, (4)" you said doing the motion with him." One of the most essential partner moves done in bachata is the turn. In the most basic variation of this move, you're gonna raise your arm, allowing me to complete a full turn in time to the music, then both of us return to normal dancing without missing a beat."
"On beat 4, begin to raise your leading arm your arm over my head baby and begin to release your other arm's grip on my back.
On beat 1 of the next measure, I will begin to turn in a circle under your arm, gently holding on to your leading arm as I do so." You said as he told you he wanted to try it.He was doing everything correctly until you stopped telling the beats.
"I have to say the beats in my own head I think" he said laughing.
"You definitely have to yeah." You said, wrapping your arms around him, jumping up kissing all over his face.
Okay so I want you all to know I'm not Latin, these steps are from Google. I hope it's somewhat easy to understand, I saw a request from a fellow friend on here and decided to give it a try.
