I crawled away and went into the forest with Madeline following me.

"Isn't your dad's well step-dads name Henry, was he that guy?" asked Madeline once we were about half way through the forest.

"Yeah"

"So he's trying to take over the island with those pirates, well those mean, ugly looking men."

"I'm not sure pirates are even around now," I said.

"Well have you thought of a better name for them? Your not one of them are you?"

"No of course not, "

"Oh thank goodness"

"Why"

"Because I would be so scared if I was on my own"

"Okay?"

"But do you think they are going to take over the island?" Madeline asked alarmed.

"I know just about as much as you do" I sighed, I felt so confused and hurt, that Henry was on the pirate's side. I wouldn't ever of guessed it. I was scared for mum. Was she even alive? What had Henry even done? Tears started flooding my eyes I tried my best to hide them from Madeline.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah" my voice croaked.

"What are you crying about?" she asked kindly.

"I'm not crying, I'm just thinking, about my mum"

"Oh, well I'm sure she'll be okay"

"Thanks Madeline"

"You don't have to call me Madeline you can just call me Maddie"

"Okay then, thanks Maddie"

She giggled quietly. I smiled; she wasn't being mean for once.

"Lets find a place to stay for the night," suggested Maddie.

"I think we should walk to the city"

"No way it's so late, I don't think I can stay awake much longer"

"Fine, I'm going to go find a pile of leaves,"

"Why do you want a pile of leaves?"

"To sleep on,"

"What about the bugs, and spiders and nasty creepy crawlies,"

"Well there is one other option,"

"What?"

"The old log cabin." There is an old log cabin in the forest and the door is always open. No one knows who even owns it. I don't think anyone would want to own it because of its broken floorboards, smashed windows and rat-invested roof.

"No way! That place is haunted!"

"No it isn't"

"Yes it so is!"

"I was dared to spend one night there, it was nothing,"

"Maybe for you,"

"Fine, we'll sleep outside we don't exactly have a choice, unless you want to go back to the city for the second time today, just be thankful it isn't raining," I snapped then I sat down underneath the tree. Madeline walked off to a tree a few metres away. She was soon fast asleep.

The sun's rays shone through the leaves of the tree I was sleeping under. It took me a few seconds to remember what had happened the day before. I sat up. Maddie. Where did she go? She would be to scare to run off on her own? I got up on my feet.
