Korra could hear the laughter ring in the air. Even when he was encased in hard rock, Zaheer roared a burst of laughter that was jarring to everyone as when she had Wan’s limp body in her arms. The fight between Wan and Zaheer had been horrifying to watch as Wan was dying fighting him off. Korra could feel his skin roughed, she could see his bleeding feet and his eyes glowing white in the Avatar state that was keeping his body alive.
Korra awoke from that dream with a sharp breath. It's been two days, and she still thinks about what had happened. Where could she begin? Avatar Wan had been reborn into this era and had been her partner in crime for the past year or so: Zaheer and the Red Lotus with their whole plan for the world to be plugged into chaos.
The newly discovered Airbenders had been held hostage. Wan had sacrificed himself for their sake and was paralyzed from the waist down. Here she was, two days after the battle of Laghima Peak, and she could still feel the chills going through her body. Wan's rage and pain flooded. She felt them with their shared connection to Raava. Felt his life force being drained as the Avatar state kept him alive. Luckily Suyin managed to get the poison out, but he was paralyzed from the waist down. It was unknown if it was temporary or permanent, they had told her.
Korra walked across the halls of the male side of Air Temple Island. It was deadly silent, a stark contrast from the past screams of pain from Wan. Kya slid the door open from Wan’s room, and a tired-looking Ayame Nami was right behind her. Korra had her injury, a broken arm, but she couldn't care less about that right now.
“Korraー you should be resting.” The older water bender frowned, walking up towards her.
"I'm fine, Kya," She said, moving away and shaking her sleepiness off. Changing the subject quickly, she asked: "How is he?" She glanced behind them towards his door, then at Ayame and Kya.
“Wan’s asleep. Took a while, but he's asleep.” Kya said, “He can’t feel anything in his legs, but his whole body is in consistent pain.” Ayame was near the brink of tears when Kya said that, but the elder woman held her resolve.
“Kya is doing her best.” Ayame said.
"That and I've never dealt with mercury poisoning before, and I doubt my mother has.” Kya sighed, “but it's a new learning curve."
"It's not gonna heal overnight or in a month, just so you know." Kya continued.
Korra didn’t even want to think about how the poison got inside of him, nor the chains on his arms and wrists. No one knew what had happened in that cave.
By the time she and Team Avatar came, they watched as Wan chased Zaheer down in the Avatar state with the intent to kill. She felt that pain and Spirit. It made her want to destroy Zaheer. Only her father had kept her away from burning that man to nothing but ashes and cinder.
"Zaheer shouldn't be left alive," Ayame sniffed and blinked away her tears.
“...I agree,” Korra said.
In earshot, Tenzin walked in. He was better but still had a few injuries. He was dressed in his orange robes.
"We don't get to decide who lives or dies," Tenzin spoke, glancing at Ayame and Korra.
Korra placed her good arm on her hip, “Well, Zaheer almost made that choice for Wan.” Korra spat back. “He's lucky I cared more about saving Wan than killing him.”
