I wake up to a small white hospital room with a horrible throbbing in my head. I turn my head to see my father talking with the doctor. My Dad has tattoos from head to toe and doesn't really give a fuck about anything (except me of course). I must have made a distressed noise because before I knew it my father was next to my hospital bed, stroking my hair.
"Hey sweetheart, how are you feeling?"
"Like shit", I replied as if it was obvious.
He laughed a throaty laugh, his laugh is one of my favorite things about him besides his tattoos.
"Well, the doctor says you have smoke inhalation. You're going to have to stay here overnight," my father said, "but don't worry everything is going to be okay."
I smiled,"That's okay, I don't mind staying overnight with you."
My dads face dropped,"I'm sorry baby but have to go on a business trip, its my last one and I really need to win this case."
Believe it or not my dad is a lawyer, the job pays well but he's always away.
"Its okay," I said trying to hide my disappointment,"I'll be fine on my own."
He gave me a small smile before kissing my forehead and leaving the room. I closed my eyes, thinking about to the fire. I still can't believe Austin saved me, but why? I mean, we barely know each other. I'm snapped out of my thoughts when I felt someone sit on the end of the bed. I open my green eyes to see blue ones staring back at me. He was covered in ash and cinder from the fire, I also noticed the whites of his eyes were red like mine.
"Hey" he said, his voice raspy.
"Hi," I said, my voice also raspy,"What are you doing here?"
"Well, my parents one day decided to have se-"
"No, I mean why did you save me and what started the fire?" I cut him off before he could finish his story.
He chuckled,"Someone had left a joint on the carpet inside, the carpet caught fire and spread to the rest of the house. We were still in the backyard when this happened, I had jumped the fence and called you to follow me. Turns out your a pretty deep sleeper and you didn't wake up. While the firefighters were treating people I realized that you weren't behind me. So I ran back inside to save you."
I smiled a small smile, then it hit me. Where's Gabbi?
"Wait, where's Gabbi?" I blurted, totally ruining the moment. He looked at me with a confused look on his face, I forgot he didn't go to my school.
"My friend, she has faded teal hair and was wearing extremely high heels."
He shook his head,"I was one of the first people to get out of the fire, I didn't see your friend."
I've never had a panik attack before, but I had one. Its not very fun. I started hyperventilating and everything went blurry.
"Hey, hey its okay. I'm sure she's alright, just look at me and nothing else." He said in a soothing voice. I looked up to see that he had gotten closer to me, our noses could have touched. I stared into his beautiful eyes until my breathing went back to normal.
"Why did you save me?" I said breaking the awkward tension.
"Huh?"
"Why did you save me from the fire? Why didn't you just let me burn?"
He smiled,"I saved you because I decided to not be an ass for once in my life. Plus you're the only friend I have in this town, and I wouldn't forgive myself if something bad happend to you. Unlike me, you have a future."
Future.
A future that he can't be apart of.
Art is too important to throw away for this guy.
I promised myself I wouldn't fall for him.
I'm breaking that promise bit by bit everyday.
Dammit.
